Key principles
- · The opponent's guillotine grip becomes a liability because it prevents them from creating space or framing against the shoulder pressure.
- · Shoulder pressure must be directed precisely into the near-side carotid artery, angling the weight diagonally across the neck.
- · Sprawling the legs back and driving hips to the mat maximizes the downward force transmitted through the shoulder.
- · Controlling the opponent's far-side arm (underhook or wrist control) prevents them from pushing your shoulder off or turning into you.
- · If the opponent tries to release the guillotine to escape, immediately transition to standard side control attacks.
Execution
- 1 When caught in a guillotine, pass to side control on the same side as the choking arm, keeping your head trapped but posture heavy.
- 2 Secure an underhook or wrist control on the opponent's far-side arm so they cannot frame or bridge effectively.
- 3 Walk your legs away from the opponent and sprawl your hips flat to the mat, removing any space under your body.
- 4 Drive your shoulder blade directly into the near-side of the opponent's neck at the carotid artery, angling your weight across their throat.
- 5 Maintain heavy, consistent pressure and wait for the tap; the choke often takes several seconds as blood flow is restricted.
Common mistakes
- × Placing the shoulder on the chin or jaw instead of directly on the carotid artery, which causes discomfort but fails to produce a blood choke and allows the opponent to endure.
- × Keeping hips elevated or legs too close to the opponent, reducing the amount of dead weight transferred through the shoulder and giving them space to escape.
- × Neglecting to control the opponent's far arm, allowing them to frame against the shoulder, create distance, or reguard before the choke sets in.
