Guillotine Defense
Escape
The guillotine defense is an escape used when an opponent has secured a guillotine choke from any position (guard, standing, or half guard). The goal is to relieve choking pressure on the neck, pass to a safe side, and establish a dominant or neutral position before the choke can be finished.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Tuck your chin and turn your face into the opponent's chest to reduce direct throat pressure.
- · Get to the 'safe side' (the side of the choking arm) so your body weight stacks on the opponent and neutralizes finishing leverage.
- · Drive forward and stay heavy on the opponent rather than pulling away, which only tightens the choke.
- · Control the opponent's wrist or grip on the choking hand to prevent them from re-adjusting or switching to a high-elbow finish.
- · Act immediately—the longer you wait, the deeper the grip sets and the smaller your escape window becomes.
Execution
- 1 As soon as the guillotine is applied, immediately tuck your chin, posture into the opponent, and clasp your hands together around their torso on the choking-arm side.
- 2 Step or hip-switch to the choking-arm side (safe side), driving your shoulder across their body and stacking your weight onto them.
- 3 Use your free hand to grip and peel their choking wrist downward while keeping constant chest-to-chest pressure.
- 4 Walk your hips around to complete the guard pass to side control on the safe side, keeping your head tight against their body until the grip fully breaks.
- 5 Once free, immediately establish crossface and underhook control to prevent them from re-engaging the choke.
Common mistakes
- × Pulling your head straight back to escape, which actually extends the neck and makes the choke tighter and easier to finish.
- × Passing to the wrong side (away from the choking arm), which exposes the throat and gives the opponent the angle to finish with a high-elbow or arm-in guillotine.
- × Staying upright or on your knees without driving forward, allowing the opponent to close guard and create the hip extension needed to complete the choke.
