Bruno Bastos

Born on March 27, 1980, Bruno Bastos took his first steps on the mats in 1990 at the age of ten, beginning his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey under Neury Gomes. Over the course of approximately one and a half years, Gomes laid the technical groundwork that would underpin Bastos's entire career. A brief stint with Aílson Brites followed before Bastos found the coach who would define his development most profoundly.

In 1993, Bastos began training under Wendell Alexander — a relationship that would carry him all the way to his black belt. Beyond technique, Alexander instilled in Bastos a deep commitment to community involvement and mentorship, values that would come to define his identity within the sport. His competitive fire was apparent from the start: even as a yellow belt, Bastos entered tournaments and reached the podium immediately, establishing a pattern of high-level performance that would persist for decades.

As a black belt, Bruno Bastos emerged as one of the foremost competitive representatives of Nova Uniao, the storied two-time world champion team that produced some of the most celebrated grapplers in the sport's history. Through the 2000s and into the early 2010s, Bastos compiled a formidable record across the CBJJO, CBJJE, and IBJJF circuits, establishing himself as a dominant and consistent force in the super-heavyweight division.

CBJJO and CBJJE Success

His performances on the Brazilian circuit were defined by both breadth and reliability. At the CBJJO Brazilian Cup, Bastos claimed gold on multiple occasions — including weight and absolute double victories in 2002 and 2005 — with additional titles in 2004 and 2007. The 2008 season proved especially strong, with Bastos capturing the CBJJE World Championship title and completing a weight and absolute double at the CBJJE Brazilian Nationals. His versatility extended beyond the gi as well: he won the Submission Wrestling de Campos championship in 2001, 2002, and 2004, and competed in the cross-disciplinary Duelo de Titans (Jiu-Jitsu vs Luta-Livre) events in 2001 and 2002, claiming first place in both editions.

IBJJF Circuit Results

On the IBJJF circuit, Bastos secured gold at the IBJJF Rio Open in 2008, followed by victories at the IBJJF American Nationals and IBJJF NY Open in 2010. He reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship in 2010 with a third-place finish, added further third-place finishes at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship in both 2010 and 2013, and reached the final of the IBJJF Pro League GP in 2012. After more than two decades representing Nova Uniao, Bastos departed in 2014 to chart an independent course.

In no-gi competition at the Masters level, Bastos claimed IBJJF No-Gi World Championship gold on four occasions — earning both weight and absolute titles in 2012, then adding further championship wins in 2015, 2016, and 2018. Gi Competition and Pan American Circuit

His gi performances at the Masters World Championship produced gold medals in 2013 and 2020, demonstrating an elite longevity that few competitors sustain. Following his departure from Nova Uniao in 2014, Bruno Bastos founded the Bruno Bastos Association, establishing an independent competitive and instructional framework for himself and his students. Two years later, in 2016, he expanded that vision by creating the LEAD Team, based in Midland, Texas.

The name LEAD is an acronym for "Live Everyday to Achieve your Dreams" — a philosophy that encapsulates the ethos Bastos sought to build into the organization from the ground up. A defining structural feature of the LEAD Team is its deliberate design to allow affiliates to grow without being tied to a single brand identity, a model that prioritizes the development of member schools and coaches over centralized control. This approach facilitated rapid expansion, with affiliates established across Brazil, the United States, Bulgaria, Australia, and Mexico.

On the competition floor, the LEAD Team built a credible record at IBJJF Opens and Pan American tournaments. Bastos's own continued success during this period — including Masters World Championship gold in 2020 — served as a visible demonstration of the standards the organization promotes. His fifth-degree black belt, awarded by Wendell Alexander, reflects the enduring mentorship that has accompanied Bastos from his earliest days on the mats through to his leadership of an international organization.

Bruno Bastos's contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu reach well beyond the competition circuit into community development and social welfare. In 2005, he founded Arte Suave with a specific mission: to use jiu-jitsu as a tool for keeping children away from drugs. The initiative draws a deliberate line between the sport's physical and ethical dimensions, positioning jiu-jitsu as a vehicle for shaping young lives rather than merely producing competitive athletes.

The founding of Arte Suave mirrors the charitable work carried out by Bastos's own master, Wendell Alexander, reflecting a tradition of giving back passed down through the coaching lineage. This continuity between teacher and student in matters of social responsibility is as significant as the technical knowledge transmitted through the same relationship.

Bastos also co-created Projeto Atos, an initiative that originated among Wendell Alexander's former Nova Uniao students who came together through their shared evangelical faith. What began as a faith-based social project grew into a meaningful BJJ initiative, illustrating the diverse channels through which Bastos has sought to broaden the sport's reach. Together, Arte Suave and Projeto Atos reflect a coherent philosophy: that jiu-jitsu carries a responsibility to the communities it inhabits, and that competitive achievement and social contribution are not competing priorities but complementary ones.

The Bastos surname carries considerable weight within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Bruno is far from alone in bearing it on the mats. Six family members train and compete in the sport, forming a collective presence that speaks to how deeply jiu-jitsu is woven into the Bastos family identity.

Among them, four hold black belts: Fernanda Bastos, André Bastos, Ricardo Bastos, and Bianca Bastos. Thiago Bastos and Felipe Bastos round out the family's representation in the sport. This breadth of involvement — spanning multiple generations and both genders — is relatively rare even within a sport where family participation is not uncommon.

Bruno's role as a competitive leader, coach, and organizational founder has created a framework within which the broader Bastos family's involvement in jiu-jitsu is nurtured and sustained. Their collective presence on the competition circuit and within affiliated academies reflects not only shared athletic aptitude but a shared commitment to the values Bruno has championed throughout his career: discipline, community, and the relentless pursuit of excellence on and off the mats.
