Paulo Rezende

Paulo Rezende was born on May 11, 1961, in Brazil, and began his martial arts education at the remarkably young age of six with judo. Rather than settling into a single discipline, he pursued a broad exploration of combat sports, adding karate, capoeira, and kung fu to his practice over the years. This diverse foundation gave him an unusually well-rounded understanding of movement and body mechanics before he ever stepped onto a BJJ mat.

At 16, Rezende discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu — an encounter that would redefine the trajectory of his martial arts journey. His early BJJ development unfolded under the guidance of Otavio "Peixotinho", under whom he trained through the purple belt level. He continued his evolution under Iran Brasileiro, earning his brown belt under that tutelage. The defining final step came under Leonardo Castello Branco, who awarded Rezende his black belt in 2000. That same year, Rezende validated his competitive development by finishing as runner-up at the World Championship in the Master division — a result that underscored both his technical growth and competitive drive.

Following his black belt promotion, Paulo Rezende channeled his energy into building an institution rather than simply an academy. He founded his school in Poço de Caldas, Minas Gerais, and set about creating an environment where serious athletic development could thrive. Central to this vision was the establishment of an "Athlete House" — a residential program designed to provide young grapplers with housing and direct support, removing the barriers that might otherwise prevent talented athletes from reaching their potential.

The results speak for themselves. Over the course of his coaching career, Rezende developed more than 200 black belts from his academy, a figure that reflects both the volume and consistency of his instruction. His team operates under the banner of Paulo Rezende JJ, with affiliations to Zenith BJJ, and he holds a 5th degree black belt — a rank earned through decades of sustained dedication to the art. Within the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community, and especially within Minas Gerais, Rezende stands as an iconic figure whose influence on the regional scene is difficult to overstate.

Producing Champions on the Global Stage

The most enduring measure of Paulo Rezende's impact is found in the competitors his small-city academy produced. Chief among them is Marcelo Garcia, widely regarded as one of the greatest submission grapplers in the history of the sport. Garcia's rise to global dominance had its roots in Rezende's academy in Poço de Caldas, making the coach a foundational figure in one of BJJ's most celebrated careers. Alongside Garcia, Rezende developed elite competitors including Reinaldo Ribeiro, Rodrigo Ranieri, and Matheus Diniz, each of whom went on to succeed at the highest levels of international competition.

Influence Beyond the Competition Mat

Rezende's reach extended beyond the gi competition circuit. In 2007, he assisted Demian Maia in preparation for UFC 77, contributing to a camp that resulted in Maia earning "Submission of the Night" honors — a performance that helped establish Maia as one of the premier BJJ practitioners in mixed martial arts.

Despite the celebrated nature of his coaching legacy, Rezende has been candid about the personal complexities that can accompany such a role. He has publicly expressed mixed feelings regarding the gratitude shown by certain former students, including Marcelo Garcia, offering an honest glimpse into the human dynamics that often exist beneath the surface of coach-athlete relationships. Through it all, his core philosophy has remained consistent: the Athlete House program and his hands-on approach to nurturing young grapplers reflect a coach committed not only to producing champions, but to genuinely investing in the people behind the results.
