Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The choking mechanism comes from the near-side armpit closing around the neck while chest pressure drives downward, creating a clamp effect on the carotid arteries.
  • · Hips must drop low and heavy toward the mat on the choking side to generate the compressive force rather than relying on arm strength.
  • · The choking-side arm threads deep under the opponent's neck so the bicep and shoulder form a tight seal with no space.
  • · Sprawling the legs back and angling slightly toward the choking side increases pressure and prevents the opponent from creating frames or escaping hips.
  • · Anticipate the opponent turning into you or bridging by maintaining heavy chest-to-chest contact and readjusting your angle to stay centered on their neck.

Execution

  1. 1 From side control or shoulder of justice, begin transitioning toward north-south while threading your near-side arm deep under the opponent's neck, palm facing down toward the mat.
  2. 2 Settle into north-south position with your chest heavy on the opponent's chest, ensuring your choking-side armpit is sealed tightly around the side of their neck.
  3. 3 Grip your hands together (Gable grip or palm-to-palm) near the opponent's far-side shoulder, locking the arm position in place.
  4. 4 Sprawl your legs back, drop your hips toward the mat on the choking side, and angle your body slightly toward that side to maximize the squeeze.
  5. 5 Hold steady pressure and make micro-adjustments by walking your hips lower until the choke closes both carotid arteries for the finish.

Common mistakes

  • × Positioning too high on the opponent's body instead of sliding down so the armpit sits directly on the neck, resulting in a crank rather than a clean choke.
  • × Keeping hips elevated instead of dropping them heavy to the mat, which removes the primary source of choking pressure and allows the opponent to escape.
  • × Rushing the finish before the arm is threaded deep enough under the neck, leaving space that lets the opponent tuck their chin or turn to relieve pressure.
