Rodney Ellis

Rodney Ellis was born on April 28, 1978, in Cronulla, Australia, into a household that actively encouraged athletic pursuits. From an early age, he immersed himself in Rugby, Cricket, and Nippers — the Australian surf lifesaving program for young athletes — building the physical foundation and competitive mindset that would later define his martial arts career.

At age 11, Ellis turned his focus to martial arts, joining a local gym to train Goshin Ryu Ju-Jutsu under Gordon Griffiths. Years of dedication to the traditional Japanese art sharpened his discipline and gave him a strong technical grounding in grappling. By 17, he began training more frequently with Larry Papadopoulos, himself a student of Griffiths. Papadopoulos proved to be the pivotal bridge in Ellis's martial arts journey — introducing him to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and setting him on a path that would take him from the beaches of New South Wales to the academies of Rio de Janeiro.

Recognizing the depth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu early in his training, Rodney Ellis traveled to Brazil to seek instruction at its source. His first coach there was Assed Haddad, who taught at the Osvaldo Alves academy in Rio de Janeiro. Under Haddad's guidance, Ellis earned his blue belt and continued to sharpen his game within the Brazilian training environment.

In 1999, Haddad brought Ellis to the Nova Uniao headquarters to train under André Pederneiras, one of BJJ's most decorated coaches. The relationship with Pederneiras proved transformative — he awarded Ellis both his purple and brown belts, with each promotion taking place in the presence of Assed Haddad, honoring the lineage and mentorship that had guided Ellis to that point.

On November 16, 2005, André Pederneiras formally promoted Rodney Ellis to the rank of black belt in a ceremony held in Rio de Janeiro. Though Assed Haddad was unable to attend — being in Florida at the time — the promotion stood as the culmination of years of transatlantic dedication, a journey that began on the mats of a Cronulla gym and reached its milestone in the city where so much of Ellis's development had taken place.

Rodney Ellis built one of the most consistent competitive records in the Australasian BJJ scene, delivering elite-level performances across multiple belt levels, formats, and weight divisions. His early results at the NSW State Championships set the tone, taking gold in the purple belt division in 2003 and the brown belt division in 2004 — a rare continuity of excellence across the transition between ranks.

Pan Pacific Championships

At the Pan Pacific Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Ellis cemented his status as one of Australia's foremost competitors, claiming the title in both 2007 and 2009. These victories reflected not only technical mastery but also the competitive longevity that defines elite grapplers. Ellis competes across both the Peso Leve (76kg) and Peso Medio (81kg) weight divisions, demonstrating versatility at the regional and international level.

ADCC Australasian Trials

Perhaps the most compelling thread in Ellis's competition record runs through the ADCC Australasian Trials. He finished as runner-up on three separate occasions — in 2001, 2005, and 2007 — before finally claiming first place at the 2009 edition. That breakthrough win, earned after years of near-misses at one of the region's most prestigious no-gi qualifiers, speaks to the resilience and sustained commitment that define his competitive character. Ellis carried that momentum into 2010, taking first place at the AJP World Pro Australasian Trials and affirming his standing at the top of the Australasian BJJ landscape.
