Laurah Hallock

Born on April 23, 1991, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Laurah Hallock built her athletic identity long before she ever set foot on a BJJ mat. Starting competitive swimming at age 5, she pursued the sport seriously through her mid-teens, developing the endurance, physical discipline, and competitive drive that would later define her approach to jiu-jitsu.

Hallock's introduction to BJJ came at age 15 through a self-defense class at a local academy in Corpus Christi. That first exposure quickly evolved into a genuine passion for the art, setting her on a path from South Texas to the highest levels of the IBJJF competitive circuit.

Seeking elite-level instruction, Hallock relocated from Texas to California to train at the Art Of Jiu-Jitsu Academy under Rafael Mendes and Guilherme Mendes. AOJ's technically demanding environment and culture of world-class competition played a decisive role in shaping her through the colored belt ranks.

Her results during those formative years reflected the caliber of her training. As a purple belt in 2013, she reached the podium at both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pan Championship. She carried that momentum into 2014, earning medals at both Worlds and Pans as a brown belt — a back-to-back showing that signaled her readiness for the sport's highest level.

Hallock subsequently moved to Ohio and joined GF Team under Vitor Henrique Oliveira, who formally awarded her black belt. The transition from AOJ to GF Team reflects a career defined by deliberately seeking out elite environments and the coaches best positioned to unlock her potential.

At black belt, Hallock established herself as one of the most consistent competitors in the Peso Médio division (69 kg / 152.5 lbs) on the IBJJF circuit. Her podium appearances span multiple belt levels and culminated in a standout 2019 season that marked the peak of her competitive output.

Building a Black Belt Résumé

In 2016, Hallock announced her arrival among the divisional elite with bronze medals at both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pan Championship. She reinforced that momentum with gold at the 2016 IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open, demonstrating her ability to convert technical development into consistent results across the circuit. The 2017 season added open tournament victories in Charlotte and Cincinnati to her growing résumé.

The 2019 Peak

No season captured Hallock's competitive ceiling more fully than 2019. She claimed gold at the 2019 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship, silver at the IBJJF Pan Championship in gi, silver at the IBJJF World Championship, and additional gold medals at opens in Washington DC and Orlando. The breadth of that campaign — spanning both gi and no-gi formats across multiple marquee events — cemented her status as one of the most complete competitors of her generation in the Peso Médio category.

Alongside her jiu-jitsu career, Hallock pursued competitive bodybuilding in the bikini division, drawn in by the gym culture surrounding her training environment. Competing in two physically demanding sports simultaneously demanded exceptional conditioning, nutritional discipline, and mental focus — qualities that translated directly between both arenas.

Rather than treating the two pursuits as competing demands, Hallock approached bodybuilding as a complementary expression of the same commitment to physical excellence that drives her on the mat. This dual athletic identity sets her apart from the majority of elite BJJ competitors and reflects a broader philosophy centered on performance and self-development — one of the most distinctive elements of her identity as an athlete.
