Growing up close to Britain's countryside instilled in her a deep love of horse riding, and Cook channelled that passion into competitive showjumping as a member of the British Showjumping Association — competing from age fourteen through twenty. At 21, Cook began dating a local mixed martial arts fighter who introduced her to Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In retrospect, the move from equestrian sport to combat sport was a natural one. Both disciplines reward athletic precision, consistent training, and a sharp competitive temperament. That introduction would set the course for the rest of her athletic life.

Finding a Home at Checkmat Bristol

Cook began training Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Bristol in 2008 under Chico Mendes, co-founder of Checkmat BJJ and her primary coach through her formative years. Italo Ferreira was also present at the gym during this early period and promoted Cook to blue belt before relocating to Abu Dhabi, after which Chico Mendes assumed full leadership of the academy. The continuity of Checkmat's presence in Bristol ensured Cook's development remained anchored within the team's system from the very beginning.

Building a Competitor

The years following her blue belt promotion were among the most formative of her career. Training under Chico Mendes, Cook fell in love with the sporting dimension of jiu-jitsu and steadily established herself as one of the most competitive female grapplers in the United Kingdom. She balanced that drive with a demanding professional life, working as a physiotherapist across Cheltenham and Gloucester — having graduated from a competitive physiotherapy program in Bristol in 2011 — while commuting nightly to Bristol to train.

In a 2016 interview with Jiu-Jitsu Style (Issue 30), Cook described how she eventually specialised in respiratory physiotherapy, working in intensive care and with cystic fibrosis patients, finding deeper meaning in that specialism than in routine musculoskeletal work. The daily rhythm of clinical work by day and hard training by night demanded extraordinary commitment, but it forged the resilience that would come to define her competitive character.

The Decision to Commit

In 2014, Cook made one of the most significant decisions of her life: she left her physiotherapy career to pursue jiu-jitsu full-time. Injury, Resilience, and Relocation

The transition was immediately tested. Shortly after leaving her job, Cook suffered a serious knee injury that sidelined her for approximately six months. With no income, no sick pay, and unable to train, the period was one of the hardest of her life. Cook's pursuit of high-level training extended well beyond London. She participated in European training camps in Copenhagen under Shimon Mochizuki, where she connected with a strong cohort of elite female grapplers including Janni Larsson, Shanti Abelha, Camila Hansen, and Ida Hansson.

The Larsson Blueprint

Of those training partners, Janni Larsson left the most lasting imprint on Cook's game. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Cook credited Larsson as a particularly influential figure, describing how she absorbed and integrated Janni's spider guard, x-guard, and footlock systems into her own competitive framework. The depth of that influence was independently confirmed by Michelle Nicolini during a visit to train with the group at LSF. Nicolini remarked to Cook that her style closely resembled Janni Larsson's — a comment Cook received with both pride and amusement. A Brown Belt Career of Remarkable Depth

At Fight Zone London, Cook came under the coaching of Marco Canha, one of the most respected BJJ instructors in the United Kingdom and the man who would guide her through the culmination of her coloured belt career and into the black belt ranks.

Under Canha's direction, Cook assembled a brown belt résumé of exceptional depth. She won gold at the ADCC European Trials, claimed the IBJJF European Open title in both gi and no-gi formats, took IBJJF World Championship No-Gi gold in 2015, and earned double silver — at weight and absolute — at the IBJJF World Championship. Multiple UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Grand Slam titles followed, with the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam (2016) standing among her most prominent brown belt victories. In June 2017, Marco Canha promoted Samantha Cook to black belt — formal recognition of a brown belt career that had placed her among the finest female competitors in Europe.

The transition to black belt did not slow her competitive output. Cook claimed gold at the 2019 IBJJF European Open and secured bronze medals at the IBJJF World Championship in both 2018 and 2019. She also added UAEJJF Grand Slam Tour titles in Tokyo and Abu Dhabi in 2018, demonstrating that her technical evolution under Canha continued to yield results at the sport's highest levels.

Addressing the Participation Gap

Beyond her competitive career, Samantha Cook has invested genuine effort in growing women's participation in Brazilian jiu-jitsu across the United Kingdom. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, she spoke at length about the gap between rising female gym membership and actual competition registrations, noting that prize packages offered by organisations like BJJ247/Lawrence did not always translate into entries, and that events such as Kleos Grappling sometimes struggled to reach minimum competitor thresholds despite offering meaningful incentives.

Teaching, Advocacy, and Leading by Example

Cook's response to that challenge has been practical and personal. She encourages women to compete consistently rather than waiting until they feel fully prepared, arguing that competitive experience is itself the fastest path to improvement. She advocates attending open mats and women-centric seminars, and urges practitioners to seek varied training environments whenever circumstances allow.

Teaching forms a central part of that advocacy. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Cook described her first seminar — held in November prior to a subsequent trip to the Worlds — which drew 21 women, many of them novices and several she had never previously met. She described being genuinely surprised by the turnout and moved by the enthusiasm in the room. Her primary message to students was that progress in jiu-jitsu can feel invisible for long stretches before suddenly clicking into place, and that success is available to anyone willing to persist.
