Arm In Ezekiel Choke

Submission

Arm-in Ezekiel Choke

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Trapping the opponent's arm inside the choke frame turns their defense against them by preventing escape and adding compression.
  • · The sleeve grip (gi) or wrist-over-fist configuration (no-gi) must feed deep behind the opponent's neck to generate sufficient leverage.
  • · Chest-to-back pressure and seatbelt control must be maintained to prevent the opponent from creating space or turning.
  • · Squeezing elbows together while expanding the chest produces the finishing pressure rather than muscling with the arms alone.
  • · Anticipate the opponent attempting to strip the choking hand by locking your grip before they can peel fingers.

Execution

  1. 1 From back control with seatbelt grip, slide your top (overhook-side) arm deeper across the opponent's neck so your hand reaches past their far shoulder.
  2. 2 Feed your choking hand into the sleeve of your underhook arm (gi) or clasp your fist with the opposite hand (no-gi), ensuring the opponent's defending arm is trapped inside the loop between your forearm and their neck.
  3. 3 Clamp your elbows tight together, pinching the opponent's trapped arm against their own neck to block escape routes.
  4. 4 Finish by driving your wrist blade into the side of the neck while expanding your chest and pulling your sleeve-gripping hand toward you, creating a scissors-like compression.
  5. 5 If they resist by tucking their chin, angle the choking forearm slightly to target the jaw line, making the position untenable.

Common mistakes

  • × Feeding the choking arm too shallow across the neck results in a crank rather than a choke and allows the opponent to duck out.
  • × Neglecting to keep hooks or body triangle engaged lets the opponent turn into you and relieve the choking pressure.
  • × Trying to finish by pulling with arm strength alone instead of combining elbow compression with chest expansion, leading to rapid fatigue and a loose choke.
