Jessica Cristina Santos

Jessica Cristina Santos was born on March 16, 1991, in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, where a diverse athletic upbringing shaped her competitive instincts from the start. She excelled across volleyball, futsal, and athletics before gravitating toward martial arts, displaying an early aptitude for physical competition in varied disciplines. Her first taste of grappling came through judo, which instilled foundational movement patterns and a practical understanding of leverage-based combat — a base that would later translate fluidly onto the BJJ mats. That formative exposure planted the seed for a lifelong commitment to grappling arts and informed the well-rounded technical game she would build in the years ahead.

Santos began her jiu-jitsu journey at the Ginásio Municipal Governador Mário Covas in Botucatu, training under Anderson Silva, widely known by his nickname "Banana." Silva proved to be far more than a technical coach — he served as a paternal figure, guiding Santos not only through the belt system but through her broader development as an athlete and competitor. On December 15, 2013, he promoted her to black belt, a milestone that marked the culmination of years of disciplined training and steady competitive growth.

Alongside her foundational work with Silva, Santos developed her game through meaningful collaboration with two highly respected figures in women's jiu-jitsu: Luanna Alzuguir and Miriam Cardoso. Both athletes contributed substantially to refining her technical repertoire and sharpening her competitive mindset, broadening her perspective well beyond the walls of her home academy.

Following her black belt promotion, Santos launched an international coaching career that quickly expanded her footprint across two continents. In 2014, she relocated to the United Arab Emirates, joining a coaching environment that included Luanna Alzuguir and Priscila Cardoso. Her time in the region proved productive on every front: competing on the UAEJJF circuit, she claimed gold at the Al Ain Pro in 2014 and the Dubai Pro in 2015, while also reaching the podium at the Abu Dhabi Pro that same year — results that established her as a credible force on the international stage while she simultaneously built her coaching credentials.

In June 2016, Santos made another decisive move, relocating to Seattle, Washington, to join Elite Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a coach. Her transition to representing the United States reflects the broader arc of a career that has evolved steadily from a municipal gymnasium in Botucatu into a genuinely international platform.

Santos has built a competition record spanning the UAEJJF, IBJJF, and regional circuits across the Middle East, Europe, and North America, competing in the Peso Pena (featherweight) division at approximately 129 lbs. Her 2016 IBJJF European Open victory arrived at a pivotal moment, demonstrating her readiness to perform at the highest international level as she prepared to establish herself in the United States.

Peak IBJJF Season: 2018

The 2018 season marked the peak of Santos' IBJJF competitive output. She captured the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship title and reached the podium in a second division at the same event — a testament to her endurance and versatility across weight and absolute categories. That same year, she earned a bronze medal at the IBJJF World Championship, her strongest result at the sport's most prestigious annual tournament. Santos closed out 2018 with additional gold medals at the IBJJF Las Vegas Summer Open and the IBJJF Seattle Open, underscoring the consistency she had developed as both an athlete and a coach competing on home soil.
