As a high school freshman, Couch gravitated toward the wrestling team, a natural fit for a young athlete drawn to physical challenge. That stint lasted only three months, yet it introduced him to the world of grappling and planted a seed that would grow in an unexpected direction. At 15, persistent bullying became one of the most pivotal turning points of his life — rather than retreating, Couch channeled the difficulty into something transformative.

Watching Couch struggle with bullying, two brothers and close friends — Ken and Stone Beverly — offered a straightforward solution: join a local MMA gym. Couch accepted without hesitation and immediately felt at home on the mats. Those new teammates extended an invitation to visit Pedigo Submission Fighting in Mount Vernon, Illinois — and, knowing Couch lacked a vehicle, offered to drive him themselves.

Committing to Daisy Fresh

Couch made that first trip in 2019, and what began as a visit quickly evolved into something far more significant. The culture, the training partners, and the coaching environment resonated deeply. The decision followed naturally: Couch left Kentucky behind and relocated to Illinois, committing fully to the Pedigo Submission Fighting program.

Training daily alongside some of the country's top grapplers accelerated his development at a remarkable rate. As the Daisy Fresh room earned widespread national attention, Couch emerged as one of its most prominent figures. His performances across the colored belt divisions in 2020, 2021, and 2022 reflected that growth — highlighted by a No-Gi World Championship title at brown belt and No-Gi Pan Championship gold at multiple levels.

Promoted on the Podium

On December 15, 2022, Heath Pedigo promoted Couch to the rank of black belt in a moment that carried both symbolic and competitive weight. The ceremony took place on the podium of the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship — a deliberately public setting that matched the magnitude of the achievements that had earned it. Few promotions in recent American grappling have carried as much earned significance.
