Rodriguez comes from a family deeply embedded in competitive jiu-jitsu. He is the brother of Nicky Rodriguez, a CJI champion and fellow elite no-gi grappler who competed at the sport's highest levels. Together, the Rodriguez brothers represent one of the more notable sibling pairings in modern competitive BJJ, with both athletes achieving significant results on the international stage. Jay Rodriguez trained within the B-Team collective — one of the most prominent no-gi teams in the world — competing alongside some of the sport's most recognized names.

Jay Rodriguez was removed from B-Team following serious allegations of misconduct involving female training partners. The allegations included the discovery of a hidden folder containing explicit images of female teammates alongside pornographic content — a significant breach of trust within the team environment.
