Izaak Michell was born on August 25, 1998, in Adelaide, South Australia’s largest city. From an early age, Michell embraced a dynamic and physically demanding lifestyle, engaging in a variety of sports that forged his athletic base. He dedicated himself to surfing and skateboarding, competing at a high level and developing balance, agility, and spatial awareness—attributes that later translated seamlessly to grappling. Between ages 8 and 11, Michell trained in gymnastics, earning two silver medals at Australia’s national gymnastics tournament, which further refined his coordination and body control. His athletic journey also included Australian Football (AFL), a sport blending elements of rugby and soccer, where he honed his endurance, explosiveness, and competitive drive. At 15, Michell ventured into combat sports, attending a self-defense and kickboxing gym. However, limited sparring opportunities curtailed this initial exposure, prompting him to seek new athletic challenges.

Introduction to Grappling and Early Development

Michell’s entry into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 2016 at Arruda BJJ. Initially drawn to Muay Thai, he soon discovered a natural affinity for grappling. After a year of cross-training, he committed fully to BJJ, progressing rapidly under the mentorship of coach Leo Arruda, who promoted him from white to purple belt. Michell’s athletic background and adaptability accelerated his technical growth, allowing him to develop a dynamic, movement-based style.

Advanced Training and Team Affiliations

In mid-2019, Michell relocated to New York City to train under the esteemed John Danaher. This period proved pivotal, as he formed a close bond with fellow Australian Craig Jones, then a senior student in Danaher’s group. Their partnership led Michell to join the newly established B-Team after Jones and others departed Danaher’s squad. In November 2022, on the eve of the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, Michell received his brown belt from Craig Jones—a testament to his technical progression and competitive results. Early 2023 marked a turning point, as Michell and B-Team parted ways. He spent time unaffiliated, then trained at Kingsway HQ and with elite wrestlers at Penn State, including UFC athletes Bo Nickal and Jason Nolf, further sharpening his wrestling and takedown game.

Michell’s career has been overshadowed by a series of controversies and legal disputes. A business disagreement with Craig Jones regarding visa sponsorship resulted in Michell’s exclusion from CJI events, despite invitations from John Danaher and Gordon Ryan to represent Team New Wave. In mid-December 2025, Michell was expelled from Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu and removed from the training environments of Ryan, Danaher, and Jones following public allegations and warnings from prominent BJJ figures. Social media statements from these individuals raised concerns about Michell’s presence, particularly in relation to women’s safety.

On January 6, 2026, Hays County, Texas, named Michell a fugitive, issuing an active warrant for his arrest on a second-degree felony charge. Reports indicated that multiple women filed police complaints, prompting ongoing investigations by authorities in both the United States and Australia. In response, Michell was stripped of the Subversion Jiu-Jitsu Light Heavyweight Championship. Public statements from alleged victims and BJJ community members surfaced, though official confirmation of charges was unavailable at the time. By January 8, 2026, Australian media reported that authorities believed Michell had returned to Australia, with his last known location in Queensland, and that U.S. and Australian law enforcement agencies were coordinating efforts to locate him.

Despite off-the-mat controversies, Michell distinguished himself as a formidable competitor on the international no-gi circuit. At the 2022 ADCC World Championship, he delivered a breakout performance, earning the Match of the Tournament award through a display of relentless pace, technical transitions, and strategic guard passing. Michell claimed victory at the ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials in 2022 and the ADCC Asia Trials in Bangkok in 2025, competing in the highly competitive 77 kg division. His run at the Who’s Next Tournament in 2022 saw him secure titles in both the absolute and weight categories, showcasing his adaptability against a diverse field of opponents. Michell also held the Subversion Jiu-Jitsu Light Heavyweight Championship prior to its vacancy in January 2026.
