Santeri Lilius

Santeri Lilius was born on June 26, 1991, in Finland — a country where ice hockey is woven into the national identity. True to that tradition, Lilius competed at the junior national level until the age of 14, developing the discipline and competitive edge that would later serve him well on the grappling mat. The transition, however, was anything but linear.

At 15, Lilius stepped away from hockey and enrolled in a Gensei Ryu Karate school. The experience opened an unexpected door: his sensei was an avid BJJ practitioner who deliberately wove grappling concepts into the curriculum. That exposure ignited genuine curiosity in Lilius, who soon joined a local mixed martial arts school to explore the ground game more seriously. The enthusiasm was short-lived — during early sparring sessions, a kick fractured his rib, prompting his parents to cancel his membership and prohibit further MMA training.

Rather than abandon martial arts entirely, Lilius devised a calculated alternative. He enrolled in a BJJ-only school, where the absence of striking satisfied his parents' safety concerns, and trained with a clear intention: to develop his grappling until he turned 18, at which point he planned to return to MMA. That strategic pivot never reversed itself. Jiu-jitsu absorbed him completely, and what began as a workaround became a vocation.

Early Training and Development

Santeri Lilius began his formal BJJ training in early 2008 under Raimo Posti and Marko Kallioinen — both blue belt instructors at the time representing Lucio Linhares in Finland. The foundation they laid set Lilius on a path that would span multiple academies and instructors across the European grappling community.

In the years that followed, Lilius trained across various schools and received belt promotions from instructors representing different squads, accumulating a broad technical base that reflected the richness of the European BJJ scene rather than any single stylistic tradition. Each promotion marked not just a rank advancement but a deepening of his understanding of the art, drawn from a range of competitive and coaching perspectives.

Black Belt Under Roger Gracie

The culmination of that journey came in 2015, when Roger Gracie — widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and technically complete practitioners in the history of the sport — presided over Lilius's black belt promotion. The distinction placed Lilius firmly within Roger Gracie's lineage, a mark of technical excellence that carries significant weight in the global BJJ community and reflects the exacting standard to which Lilius had been held throughout his development.

Building a Record on the IBJJF Circuit

By the time Lilius earned his black belt, he had already begun establishing a meaningful competitive presence on the European circuit. His performances on the IBJJF tournament calendar grew increasingly consistent, with podium finishes accumulating across some of the circuit's most competitive open events.

In 2015, Lilius captured gold at the IBJJF Berlin Open and the IBJJF Berlin Open NoGi — a double that signaled his arrival as a serious black belt competitor. He followed that with a title at the IBJJF Rome Open in 2016, along with a second Berlin Open NoGi gold that same year and a Spanish Nationals NoGi victory. Silver medals at the IBJJF London Fall Open in both 2015 and 2016 added further depth to a record that was becoming one of the more decorated on the European open circuit.

Competing under the Spanish flag following his relocation to the Iberian Peninsula, Lilius won both the IBJJF Madrid Open and the IBJJF Spanish Nationals in 2019, underscoring his continued relevance as he matured as a competitor. The 2020 season brought a bronze at the IBJJF European Open and a third-place finish at the UAEJJF Grand Slam London, maintaining his standing in the upper tier of European black belts.

ADCC Trials and World-Class Recognition

The peak of Lilius's competitive record came in 2022. He claimed the IBJJF European Open NoGi title and reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship NoGi, earning a bronze at one of the sport's most prestigious global events. That same year, he won the ADCC European Trials, qualifying for the ADCC World Championship — the most prestigious no-gi grappling event in existence.

He repeated the feat in 2023, winning the ADCC European Trials for a second consecutive year and cementing his status as one of the most accomplished European grapplers of his generation.

Transition from Competitor to Academy Co-Founder

Santeri Lilius's move into academy ownership grew out of an opportunity that emerged after he completed his studies at the Sports Institute of Finland. A coaching position in southern Spain was offered, and Lilius accepted without hesitation — relocating to a region far removed from the cold winters of his homeland but rich in an international sporting community.

The move to southern Spain marked the beginning of a longer project. Over approximately five years, Lilius built the financial foundation necessary to open his own gym, a goal pursued with the same discipline and patience that defined his progression as a martial artist.

The Academy and Its Philosophy

The result was the founding of LiliusBarnatt Martial Arts, established in Torremolinos in the Costa del Sol area of Spain, in partnership with UFC veteran Luke Barnatt. The academy is co-owned with Emilia Tuukkanen and operates on a philosophy of inclusivity, explicitly rejecting the factional politics that can fragment BJJ communities.

Lilius leads the advanced BJJ classes at the gym, bringing his competitive experience directly into the development of his students. The project represents a convergence of Finnish grappling values, international competitive experience, and the open, diverse culture of the Mediterranean coast — a combination that gives LiliusBarnatt Martial Arts a distinctive identity within the European BJJ landscape.

Beyond the competition circuit and the academy, Santeri Lilius and Emilia Tuukkanen have built a meaningful commitment to animal welfare. The two began rescuing stray dogs before their relocation to Spain, and the cause has grown into a sustained advocacy effort tied to one of the more pressing animal welfare issues on the Iberian Peninsula.

Lilius and Tuukkanen have adopted and fostered multiple dogs, converting personal action into a platform for raising awareness about the scale of the stray dog crisis in Spain and Portugal. The initiative reflects a community-minded identity that extends well beyond competitive sport or coaching, and it has become a defining part of how Lilius and Tuukkanen establish their presence in their adopted home country.
