Gabriel Sousa

Gabriel Sousa was born on January 10, 1997, in Fortaleza, the capital city of Ceará, Brazil. Growing up, he participated in futsal (five-a-side football) and capoeira, though he initially struggled athletically. Despite facing mockery from peers due to his limited natural athleticism, Sousa consistently demonstrated exceptional determination and a strong work ethic.

Sousa began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 12 under coach Jefferson Teixeira at Gracie Barra. His passion for the martial art quickly intensified, and he soon prioritized BJJ as a central part of his daily routine. As a blue belt, Gabriel expanded his grappling skillset by training in judo, capturing first place at the Ceará state tournament organized by the FECJU judo federation.

As a purple belt, Sousa traveled to the United States to compete at the IBJJF World Championship, training alongside Lucas Rocha, a former Gracie Barra athlete who had founded ZR Team. Gabriel developed a strong bond with Rocha, subsequently joining his team. Under Rocha's mentorship, Sousa earned his brown belt and eventually received his black belt in June 2018.

In mid-2022, shortly after competing at ADCC 2022, Gabriel Sousa made a pivotal career decision by leaving ZR Team to join Essential Jiu-Jitsu, led by renowned competitor JT Torres in New York. Sousa relocated permanently to the United States, primarily training on the East Coast, including significant periods spent in North Carolina. He credits Torres with refining his wrestling fundamentals and tactical approach, directly contributing to his silver medal performance at ADCC 2022 in the 66kg division.

Following his relocation to the United States, Gabriel Sousa began teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at an affiliate of Essential Jiu-Jitsu located in North Carolina's Research Triangle area. His presence has significantly elevated the region's no-gi talent, attracting numerous students eager to adopt his dynamic and aggressive style. Sousa actively balances his competitive career with coaching responsibilities, mirroring the approach of his mentor, JT Torres. He regularly hosts seminars, including a well-attended event in Hope Mills, North Carolina, in 2023, and organizes local team training sessions to further develop the area's grappling community.

Signature Techniques and Tactical Approach

Gabriel Sousa is widely recognized for his aggressive, high-paced competition style, characterized by explosive guard jumps, flying submissions, and relentless guillotine attacks. His tactical approach emphasizes constant pressure and rapid transitions, keeping opponents off-balance and vulnerable to submissions.

Notable Competitive Achievements

In April 2023, Sousa executed a remarkable flying armbar in just three seconds to win the lightweight final at the IBJJF Charleston Open. At the same event, he also secured bronze in the open class, demonstrating his effectiveness against heavier opponents. Sousa consistently challenges elite competitors, regularly facing top-tier athletes such as Kennedy Maciel, Diego "Pato" Oliveira, Matheus Gabriel, and Fabricio Andrey. His persistence and dedication culminated in capturing the 2023 IBJJF European No-Gi Championship, marking his first IBJJF black belt title after multiple podium finishes.
