Kennedy Maciel was born in Brazil on January 2, 1997, the son of legendary grappler Rubens Charles (Cobrinha). Despite his father's iconic status, Kennedy did not train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu during his early childhood. In 2007, his father moved to the United States, and Kennedy joined him in California in late 2012. Upon arrival, Kennedy began formal BJJ training under his father's direction at Alliance. His technical aptitude surfaced quickly—within months, he captured gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship, signaling his potential as a rising competitor.

Kennedy Maciel's ascent through the colored belt divisions was defined by dominant performances and tactical precision. He claimed world titles under both the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and United Arab Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) banners. As a colored belt, Kennedy excelled at premier tournaments, including the IBJJF World, Pan, and European Open Championships. His 2018 brown belt campaign stands out: Kennedy went undefeated, securing seven gold medals in seven tournaments. This flawless run prompted his father, Rubens Charles, to award him the black belt in June 2018.

Kennedy Maciel has emerged as a leading featherweight of his generation, blending technical mastery with strategic adaptability. In 2024, he captured the IBJJF European, Pan, and Brazilian National titles at featherweight, positioning himself for a potential Grand Slam. At the 2024 Brazilian Nationals, Kennedy earned a bronze medal in the absolute division, becoming the first featherweight since 1997 to achieve this distinction. That year, he also claimed the 66kg title at the ADCC Brazilian Trials, securing his place at the ADCC World Championship. After early success in no-gi competition, Kennedy shifted focus to gi events, amassing over 20 consecutive wins in his division—a testament to his consistency and technical evolution.
