Lucas Karnard

Lucas Kanard received a short-notice invitation on September 1, 2026 to compete at the ADCC 2026 World Championship in the -88kg division, stepping into an open slot rather than qualifying through a traditional trials pathway. He made the most of the opportunity, defeating former ADCC World Champion Matheus Diniz in the opening round before falling to Gabriel Souza in the next.

Preparing for Diniz presented a distinctive physical puzzle. In an interview with Jake Nicholls published on October 12, 2026, Kanard described the challenge plainly: "He's so hard to make an entanglement on... He's real wide. Real stocky and real wide. Like deceptively wide." His film study drew heavily on prior Diniz footage — including his matches against Gordon Ryan — and his game plan was built specifically around neutralizing that physicality before Diniz could establish his guard.

Kanard's tactical approach against Diniz centered on two interlocking passing mechanisms designed to control a wide, low opponent and sustain positional pressure throughout the match.

The first was a high tripod stepover pass, triggered by going elbow-deep and collapsing into a pinning position with weight distributed overhead. The second was a reverse body lock entry that exploited the opponent's own movement: when Diniz lifted his hips off the mat, it created a knee-elbow separation that Kanard could transition directly into a north-south pass.

In the October 2026 interview with Jake Nicholls, Kanard laid out the sequence in his own words: "If I go elbow deep, I can fall into a high high tripod stepover pass… And then with the reverse body lock if my hands are already there, when they go to lift their hips off the mat, it creates this knee elbow separation. And then I can turn it into a north-south pass." The two mechanisms functioned as a connected system — each creating the conditions for the other — conceived specifically to prevent Diniz from establishing the entanglements that make his guard dangerous.

A training session with John Danaher proved instrumental in shaping Kanard's approach at the ADCC 2026 World Championship. The central principle Kanard took from that session was what he described as "compounding score over time" — building and maintaining positional advantage rather than abandoning a strong position to chase immediate submissions.

The session prompted Kanard to address a specific habit: a tendency to release back exposure after scoring an initiation and revert to leg lock hunting, something he acknowledged doing "most of the time" when he found himself in that position. Against Diniz, he made a deliberate adjustment, staying with the positional progression rather than pivoting to a submission hunt. The result, as he described it in the Nicholls interview, was sustained psychological pressure on his opponent: "So then I just stayed with it and then he was the one who was suffering psychologically."

The session left a lasting impression on Kanard's broader training philosophy. Reflecting on it in the October 2026 interview, he said: "If I train like this every day, how does anyone lose a match? Cuz it was just so concise. This is exactly what needs to happen for you to win the match. Just do it."

Kanard's competitive history reflects a willingness to move across weight boundaries near the 88kg line. In 2024, he entered the ADCC Trials in the under 88kg division, then stepped out of that bracket to fill in for Mason Fowler in the over 80kg division at CJI — demonstrating both the physical range to compete across adjacent divisions and a readiness to accept opportunities at short notice.

That same adaptability resurfaced in 2026, when he accepted his invitation to the ADCC 2026 World Championship on short notice and made an immediate mark by defeating one of the division's most accomplished veterans in his opening match. Kanard qualified for the 2026 event through the Asia Oceania region.
