Gianni Grippo was born on March 21, 1992, and raised in the New York area. Influenced by his father, a former triathlete, Grippo immersed himself in competitive sports from a young age. Initially excelling as a junior swimmer, he qualified for the Junior Olympics three consecutive years and secured a spot on his high school's varsity swim team as a freshman. Grippo also explored amateur boxing, demonstrating his diverse athleticism before ultimately discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Grippo's introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu occurred through his father, who learned about Renzo Gracie Academy (RGA) from a friend. After attending his first class under instructor Magno Gama, Gianni quickly developed a passion for grappling. His family supported his dedication by commuting daily to Manhattan, ensuring optimal training conditions. Under the RGA banner, Grippo rapidly ascended through the ranks, dominating lower belt divisions and capturing multiple IBJJF World Championship titles at blue, purple, and brown belt levels.

In March 2012, Grippo made a pivotal career decision, transitioning from Renzo Gracie Academy to Marcelo Garcia Academy (MGA-Alliance). Seeking a more sport-specific training environment, Grippo's move sparked controversy within the community, particularly among RGA affiliates such as Rafael Correa and Garry Tonon. Despite initial criticism, Grippo thrived under the mentorship of legendary competitor Marcelo Garcia, who awarded him his black belt on October 1, 2013.

The Berimbolo Generation

Gianni Grippo is widely recognized as a leading figure of the "Berimbolo Generation," known for his technical guard play and innovative grappling strategies. His style emphasizes precise positional control, fluid transitions, and technical creativity, heavily influenced by his mentor Marcelo Garcia.

Ecological Training Methodology

Grippo advocates for the ecological approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, prioritizing scenario-based practice over isolated drilling. He successfully implements this methodology with both beginners and experienced competitors, consistently producing notable results at his academy.

In early 2024, Grippo expanded his competitive horizons by signing with ONE Championship to compete in submission grappling. He made his promotional debut against Gabriel Sousa in a featherweight grappling match at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok. This marked a significant step onto the global stage, following years of success in IBJJF competitions and other prestigious grappling events.

Outside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Grippo engages in rock climbing and bouldering—an uncommon cross-training method among elite grapplers. He credits climbing with significantly enhancing his grip strength, problem-solving skills, and overall athleticism. Inspired by legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady, Grippo adopted a strict vegan diet several years ago. He publicly attributes substantial improvements in energy levels, endurance, and recovery to eliminating meat and dairy from his diet. Grippo actively promotes plant-based nutrition, emphasizing its positive impact on athletic performance, resilience, and overall health.

Grippo remains actively involved in coaching and mentorship, applying his innovative ecological training methods to develop successful competitors. In May 2023, he promoted his first black belt student, Hunter Phares, marking a significant milestone in his coaching career.
