Gianni Grippo was born on March 21, 1992, and grew up in the New York area in a household where competitive sport was a way of life. His father, a former triathlete, enrolled him in athletics from a young age and cultivated an environment where competition was the norm rather than the exception. That foundation produced a remarkably well-rounded young athlete: Grippo became an accomplished junior swimmer, reaching the Junior Olympics three consecutive years and earning a spot on his high school's varsity roster as a freshman — a rare distinction. Time in the boxing gym added striking and tactical dimensions to his athletic résumé, rounding out a profile that extended well beyond the mat.

Jiu-jitsu entered Grippo's life through his father, who learned about Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan through a friend. His first class, led by Magno Gama on the RGA mats, ignited an instant and lasting passion for grappling. The Grippo family responded with full commitment, commuting daily into Manhattan so Gianni could access the best training available in the region. For a period, jiu-jitsu occupied a secondary role behind swimming — until 2004, when the family traveled to Brazil for the BJJ World Championship. Watching Ronaldo Souza defeat Roger Gracie in what Grippo has described as one of the most epic open-weight finals he had ever witnessed, the young competitor made up his mind: he wanted to become a professional fighter. He gave up swimming entirely and committed himself to jiu-jitsu.

With a fiercely competitive personality, an unrelenting work ethic, and athletic ability honed across multiple disciplines, Grippo rapidly established himself as one of the most dominant colored-belt competitors in the United States. Carrying the Renzo Gracie Academy flag throughout his development, he won nearly every major IBJJF event during his time at blue, purple, and brown belt — accumulating six world titles before ever stepping onto the mat as a black belt: four in the gi and two in no-gi.

Those results placed Grippo at the center of what the BJJ community came to call the "Berimbolo Generation" — a cohort of competitors who redefined lower-belt competition through dynamic guard work and inversion-heavy attacking sequences. His reputation as a leading figure of that generation was built match by match on the competition circuit, where a relentless guard game and sharp finishing instincts consistently set him apart from peers.

As Grippo advanced through the belt system, his appetite for sport-specific preparation grew beyond what his home academy could comfortably provide. Renzo Gracie Academy, with its well-documented emphasis on MMA and no-gi training, was not structured around the IBJJF sport jiu-jitsu environment that Grippo was increasingly focused on. Seeking training partners and a culture oriented entirely around sport competition, he made the decision to move to the Marcelo Garcia Academy (MGA-Alliance).

In March 2012, Grippo announced the switch via social media — a move that caught many at RGA off guard, as no one at the gym had been informed in advance. The departure generated significant controversy within the community. Figures close to Renzo Gracie, including Rafael Correa and Garry Tonon, publicly criticized how the transition was handled. Controversy aside, the decision proved pivotal. At MGA, Grippo found himself surrounded by like-minded competitors aligned around IBJJF and ADCC rule sets, training in an environment with a singular focus on sport jiu-jitsu — a stark contrast to the multi-disciplinary culture he had left behind.

On October 1, 2013, Marcelo Garcia awarded Grippo his black belt. The promotion followed roughly ten years of development at Renzo Gracie's academy and a formative period under Garcia's tutelage that Grippo has credited with significant influence on his technical and competitive growth. The black belt was quickly validated on the competition floor: in 2014, only months after the promotion, Grippo claimed gold at the Pan American Championship, cementing his standing as one of the top competitors of his generation.

A Systematic Approach to Competition

Grippo competes in the Peso Pena division (70kg/154lbs) and has built one of the most recognizable and statistically coherent game plans in modern competitive jiu-jitsu. His system is anchored in the De La Riva Guard and Reverse De La Riva Guard, which he uses to initiate sweeping sequences before transitioning into leg drag passes, back takes, and chokes from the back. The game plan flows in a clear, deliberate direction: establish open guard, sweep to create a passing opportunity, drag the leg to take the back, and finish with a choke.

A tactical analysis published in Jiu-Jitsu Style (Issue 22, 2014), authored by Tyler Bishop and based on a sample of 20 freely available IBJJF matches from the 2012–2014 period, quantified just how systematic that approach was. The study found that approximately 75% of Grippo's recorded sweeps originated from De La Riva or Reverse De La Riva positions, that every recorded pass in the sample was a leg drag — making it his sole documented passing method during that window — and that all submissions were chokes secured from the back. He posted an 80% winning percentage over the observed period, scored first in every match he won, and averaged roughly five minutes per match. Published as part of the "It's Science / Science of Jiu-Jitsu" series on BishopBJJ.com, the piece noted his youth and limited black belt experience at the time while projecting a strong competitive trajectory.

Major Titles and Career Highlights

That trajectory materialized. At the black belt level, Grippo added IBJJF No-Gi World Championship titles in 2018, 2021, and 2022, along with Pan American Championship gold in 2014, 2015, and 2018, and IBJJF No-Gi Pan titles in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2023. He also claimed Abu Dhabi Pro victories in 2015 and 2017 and won the Kasai Pro 4 Grand Prix in 2018. In addition to his BJJ credentials, Grippo earned a black belt in Luta Livre under coach Jarbem Pacheco.

In early 2024, Grippo signed with ONE Championship to compete in submission grappling, making his promotional debut against Gabriel Sousa in a featherweight grappling match at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok — bringing his skill set to one of the sport's largest global platforms. On September 12, 2025, he competed at EBI 25, where he lost to Keith Kirkorian. That same year, Grippo participated in UFC's BJJ reality series, placed on Team Brazil under coach Rerisson Gabriel.

The Mental Game at the Highest Level

As his black belt career has matured, Grippo has reflected publicly on the mental dimension of high-level competition. In a September 2025 interview with BJJDoc, he described a shift in how he understands elite matches: "It's not always who's the most technical in the match. It's the one who plays the game right who's the smartest." He traced that insight to a conversation with coach Michael Liera Jr. following a match against Marcio André at the Europeans, in which Grippo felt he had created scoring opportunities but was outmaneuvered tactically. The transition from brown to black belt, he argued, demands a corresponding shift from reactive scrapping to deliberate strategizing — with elite black belts distinguishing themselves through rule understanding, pace control, and positional planning rather than technical ability alone. Grippo is also an ADCC veteran, and both ADCC and the IBJJF World Championship remain fixtures on his competitive schedule.

A Personal Shift in Format

Despite building his competitive identity primarily as a gi practitioner, Grippo's relationship with the two formats shifted substantially following the COVID-19 pandemic. In an October 2026 interview with BJJDoc, he described finding the physical demands of gi training — extensive grips, lapel entanglements, and the constant friction of cloth — increasingly restrictive as his preferences evolved. The turning point came when he dedicated two consecutive months exclusively to no-gi preparation for a single event. After that block, he realized his preference had genuinely changed; he admitted to telling teammates he was still preparing for competitions simply as a way to keep training without the gi, because he enjoyed it more. The shift also carried practical weight: Grippo made a calculated decision to prioritize no-gi due to the greater financial opportunities and career longevity the format offers at the professional level.

The Case for Gi Training

Those personal preferences have not softened his advocacy for gi training among developing athletes. Grippo is, by his own account, visibly bothered when white and blue belts claim to dislike the gi, arguing that athletes at those stages lack the accumulated experience to make a meaningful judgment. He recommends reaching purple belt as the appropriate milestone before forming a firm preference. His core technical argument centers on guard retention: "Someone who has a good gi base, they're a lot harder to get past their frames, to get past their feet… gi players are so good at not allowing you to pass certain layers." He contrasts that with tendencies he observes in no-gi specialists, who often grow comfortable allowing opponents to penetrate deeper before attempting escapes — a habit that can result in guard passes when timing fails. In Grippo's view, the defensive foundation built through gi training transfers effectively into no-gi, while the reverse pathway is far less commonly successful at high levels. These perspectives have been a recurring topic in conversations with his girlfriend, professional athlete Brianna Ste-Marie.

Structured Instruction at Bodega Jiu-Jitsu

Grippo teaches and coaches at Bodega Jiu-Jitsu, where he runs structured sessions daily. His coaching career reached a milestone on May 4, 2023, when he promoted his first black belt: long-time student Hunter Phares.

Grippo's approach to instruction reflects the same intentionality that defines his competitive preparation. He has spoken at length about the ecological approach to BJJ training — building specific training scenarios that replicate the pressures of live competition rather than drilling isolated techniques in repetition. He has noted positive results from this methodology across all experience levels, including complete beginners who have never followed traditional drilling-heavy programs. His own extensive drilling background, he argues, complements rather than conflicts with the ecological model, giving him a technical reference point from which to design meaningful scenarios.

On Open Mats and Intentional Training

On the subject of open mats, Grippo has been direct in challenging their uncritical acceptance as productive training time. In an appearance on the Jits and Giggles podcast published on August 19, 2026, he argued: "We sometimes can find that open mats in general can be a waste of time. I feel like there's a lot of random rounds in open mats and I feel like a lot of people, it's an opportunity for people to move to get a sweat going. But sometimes I just feel like, if you're trying to get better, you really want to improve, I feel like a class with actual structure is more beneficial." He clarified that open mats can be productive when athletes "take matters into your own hands" — communicating specific goals to training partners and organizing situational rounds rather than accumulating unfocused repetitions.

The same principle governs his own training. Grippo emphasizes arriving at every session with a defined focus, noting that he identifies what he wants to work on before stepping onto the mat. Reflecting on earlier career phases, he acknowledged: "I did the reps, I did the work, but my mind wasn't completely there or I didn't come in with something I wanted to work on." His broader philosophy treats intention as more valuable than volume and cautions against the plateau that results from rigid adherence to a single training method. As of late 2026, his personal routine includes daily structured sessions at Bodega Jiu-Jitsu, weightlifting three days per week, and deliberate, scheduled rest.

Off the mats, Grippo is an avid rock climber and boulderer — a cross-training choice uncommon among elite BJJ competitors. He credits climbing with tangible improvements to his grip strength, problem-solving ability under pressure, and overall physical conditioning for jiu-jitsu. The pursuit reflects a broader creative approach to performance enhancement that extends well beyond conventional strength and conditioning work.

Grippo adheres to a strict vegan diet, finding that eliminating meat and dairy improved his energy levels, endurance, and recovery. He has spoken publicly about the regimen reducing his susceptibility to illness and injury while increasing his stamina over time, citing NFL quarterback Tom Brady — who follows a largely plant-based diet — as a source of dietary inspiration.

As of mid-2026, Grippo has spent approximately 25 years in jiu-jitsu, a span that encompasses his entire adult life and most of his adolescence. That accumulated time on the mat informs both his technical depth and the structured, intentional philosophy with which he approaches training, competition, and coaching.
