Owen Jones

Owen Jones was born in July 2004 and grew up in South London, England, in a household where sport was a constant. From the age of seven, he pursued rugby with genuine seriousness, representing his school and going on to play club rugby for London Welsh from the Scrum-Half (No. 9) position. The scrum-half role demands quick decision-making, spatial awareness under pressure, and a competitive instinct that would later translate directly to the grappling mat. Rugby commanded his focus through early adolescence, and by most accounts it was the sport in which he showed the most natural proficiency.

Jiu-jitsu entered Jones's life through an unexpected and deeply personal route. In his early teens, his sister was diagnosed with ADHD, and his parents enrolled her in jiu-jitsu classes as a structured outlet to help manage the condition. Jones joined alongside her in October 2017, at age 13 — motivated entirely by solidarity rather than competitive ambition. That motivation did not last long as his primary driver. Jiu-jitsu rapidly overtook rugby as the sport that commanded his full attention, and by age 15, Jones made the deliberate decision to quit rugby entirely, redirecting all of his athletic energy toward grappling.

Throughout his rise in competitive jiu-jitsu, Owen Jones has maintained a consistent and publicly stated loyalty to his home gym, Apex Jiu-Jitsu Academy in North London, and to its founder, David Cartwright-Khoza, whom he credits as his primary instructor regardless of where his training has taken him. That loyalty has been tested by opportunity — Jones trained with B-Team in Austin, Texas, and with Los Bandidos in London, both operating at the highest levels of submission grappling — yet he consistently returned to Cartwright-Khoza as his foundational coach.

Colored Belt Competition Record

His colored belt results reflected a practitioner developing rapidly through the IBJJF circuit. At blue belt, Jones reached the podium at the IBJJF European Championship and placed third at the IBJJF World Championship in 2022. At purple belt, he added gold at the IBJJF European Championship No-Gi in 2022 — a performance that foreshadowed what was coming on the international no-gi stage.

The clearest marker of an evolving team affiliation came in October 2026, when Jones was identified as a B-Team athlete, reflecting a meaningful shift in his primary competitive home — even as his connection to Apex Jiu-Jitsu Academy and David Cartwright-Khoza remained a defining part of his professional identity.

The moment that announced Owen Jones to the broader grappling world came in 2023, when he won the ADCC European Qualifier in the 66 kg / 145.5 lb division — while competing as a purple belt. Winning an ADCC Trials event as a colored belt against a field that routinely includes seasoned black belts is a rare result, and Jones's victory placed his name firmly on the radar of the international no-gi community.

2024 ADCC World Championship

He backed that result up at the 2024 ADCC World Championship, where he competed in the main tournament and placed fourth in his division. A 4th place finish at the sport's most prestigious no-gi event, at just 20 years old, established Jones as a legitimate top-tier competitor in his weight class — not merely a promising prospect. That same year, he claimed first place at the AIGA Qualifiers, confirming that his 2023 Trials victory was part of a consistent run across major no-gi circuits rather than an isolated breakthrough.

Jones has also competed at Who's Number One events, further embedding himself within the elite submission grappling ecosystem that sits alongside ADCC at the top of the professional no-gi world.

Alongside his competitive career, Jones took on a coaching role for fellow competitor Faris Benlamkadem — an early move into mentorship that positioned him on both sides of the competitive equation at a young age. In December 2025, Jones appeared on The White Monster Podcast partly in his capacity as Benlamkadem's coach, using the platform to address what he described as a double standard around the concept of respect in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Jones argued that some Brazilian competitors and their supporters preach respect publicly while engaging in disrespectful post-victory behavior. He spoke about being targeted with obscenities and threats online, and recounted a specific incident at a Who's Number One event — prior to December 2025 — in which he and Benlamkadem faced verbal abuse and hostile gestures before competition had even begun. Rather than calling for less pre-fight intensity, Jones defended controlled trash talk as a legitimate entertainment tool, framing it as something that requires both confidence and personal risk from the speaker — and therefore distinct from the anonymous hostility he was criticizing.

As evidence of the approach's effectiveness, Jones pointed to a callout directed at Benlamkadem by Rafael Lovato Jr., arguing that the attention generated reflected precisely the kind of competitive traction that validates putting oneself on the line publicly. The commentary revealed a practitioner who views personality-driven promotion not as a distraction from the sport, but as a meaningful part of its growth.

In August 2024, Jones released an instructional titled Leglocks For Short Kings — his first significant entry into the BJJ education and content market. The title is deliberately self-referential, addressing his own physical stature and framing lower-body attacks as a particularly well-suited system for shorter grapplers who may not carry the leverage advantages that taller competitors bring to upper-body exchanges.

The instructional signals that Jones has developed enough technical depth and specialization in leg locking to package and present it commercially — a meaningful threshold for any competitive practitioner. It also positions him within a broader evolution in submission grappling, where leg locks have moved from niche curiosity to central strategic concern at the sport's highest levels.

In a podcast episode discussed in an October 2026 article, Jones — described at the time as 22 years old — offered a candid contrast between British and American BJJ training cultures, drawing on firsthand experience in both countries.

The American Model

His characterization of American gyms was one of heightened seriousness: practitioners take both themselves and the sport with a level of intensity that permeates the entire training environment. Competitiveness is baked into the culture from the moment you walk through the door.

The British Model

The UK, in his telling, operates differently. "In the UK, everyone's like, we're all coming in late. Maybe like some of them are high, we're all talking mad [ ] to each other, we're like this guy sucks, this guy does this, and we're all joking around. And then we'll sit there and talk about technique a little bit, and then we'll train." Jones was quick to clarify that the relaxed atmosphere does not come at the cost of training quality: "Everyone wants to go to training because it's enjoyable and you can still train hard. Like we'll still talk [ ] and then when the rounds start, the rounds will still be intense and the rounds will still be hard and people still train with intention, but the environment is a little bit more relaxed."

Rather than declaring one model superior, Jones raised a genuine question about whether relentless seriousness actually produces better athletes. "I actually don't know if this is that beneficial. You know what I mean? I think enjoying training is quite important. It's like if you go to the environment and you don't want to like, if you don't want to be in that environment, I think it could be quite negative mentally." The observation reflects a practitioner thinking carefully about long-term sustainability in high-performance sport, not just short-term output.

In the same October 2026 podcast discussion, Jones spoke directly and practically about managing unsafe or problematic training partners — a subject he addressed with the bluntness of someone who has navigated these situations repeatedly.

Dealing with Unsafe Partners

He recounted refusing to continue training with a partner he considered a physical hazard: "I've literally trained with a guy, and I've just told him right around, 'Yo, I'm actually never going to train with you again.' And he was like, why? I was like, 'Yo, you're so spazzy. You kicked me like four times. You almost spinning elbowed me. I've got nothing productive from this session.'" His approach to intervention is calibrated to context. At his home gym, he described a greater willingness to address problems directly: "It depends on the dynamic, like the unsolicited advice is crazy. But obviously if he's at my gym, I can basically tell him like, 'Yo man, this is not gonna run because people are gonna get hurt. People gonna get annoyed at you… like it's not gonna end well.'" The emphasis on privacy in these conversations came through clearly — Jones advocates pulling someone aside rather than calling them out in front of the group.

Hygiene and Education

On hygiene risks, Jones took the position that education, not embarrassment, is the right tool: "You have to pull it, because some people actually don't even know. You have to pull it inside and be like, 'Yo, that my friend is staph. Yeah, search that up. That actually could kill you. You probably don't want to be on the mat right now. You're going to give it to other people, and people are going to be upset.'" The framing treats an uninformed training partner as someone worth educating rather than shaming.

Red Flags on the Mat

Jones flagged two specific behaviors as red flags in any training environment. The first is unsolicited advice: "Giving unsolicited advice is bad. Like you shouldn't be doing this, like this doesn't make sense in any area of life. If you're now unqualified to give the advice it makes it even worse." The second is black belts who refuse to roll with lower belts — a practice he rejected on both practical and philosophical grounds, noting that even a blue belt with one sharp technique offers something worth training against.
