Owen Jones

Born in South London in July 2004, Owen Jones developed a competitive instinct early, channeling it first into rugby. From the age of 7, he represented his school and played club rugby for London Welsh in the Scrum-Half role — the demanding number 9 position that rewards quick decision-making and spatial awareness. For much of his childhood, rugby appeared to be his path.

The pivot toward jiu-jitsu came through family circumstances rather than personal ambition. When his sister was diagnosed with ADHD during his early teenage years, their parents enrolled her in classes at a local club as a structured, therapeutic outlet. Jones joined in October 2017 at 13, accompanying her for moral support. That practical motivation quickly gave way to genuine fascination. Jiu-jitsu's technical depth and competitive culture drew him in progressively, and by the time he was 15, he had made a deliberate decision to quit rugby entirely and commit his athletic energy to grappling.

Building a Competitive Foundation

Jones entered the competitive landscape at juvenile and colored belt levels with a consistency that reflected both natural aptitude and disciplined training. At blue belt, he posted podium finishes at two of the IBJJF's most prestigious events — earning third place at the 2022 IBJJF World Championship and third place at the 2022 IBJJF European Championship. At purple belt, his affinity for no-gi competition emerged sharply, culminating in a gold medal at the 2022 IBJJF European Championship No-Gi — a result that foreshadowed the direction his senior career would take.

Training Environments and Core Mentorship

During these formative years, Jones sought out elite training environments beyond his home base, spending time with B-Team in Austin, Texas, and Los Bandidos in London. These experiences broadened his exposure to diverse grappling systems and competitive cultures. Through all of these affiliations, Jones consistently identified David Cartwright-Khoza — founder of Apex Jiu-Jitsu Academy in North London — as his primary and most enduring instructor, the coach to whom he expressed unwavering loyalty as his foundational guide in the sport.

Announcing His Arrival

Jones signaled his arrival on the professional grappling circuit in 2023 with a result that drew immediate attention: a first-place finish at the 2023 ADCC European Qualifier in the 66 kg / 145.5 lb division, achieved while still competing as a purple belt. Winning an ADCC qualifier at that belt level marked him as an unusually mature competitor and secured his place at the sport's most prestigious no-gi event.

In 2024, Jones continued building his credentials by winning the 2024 AIGA Qualifiers, further cementing his standing in the weight class. At the 2024 ADCC World Championship, he advanced deep into the bracket and finished 4th — a result that, for an athlete who had only recently turned 20 and was competing against seasoned professionals from around the world, served as a clear statement of his potential at the highest level.

Instructional Work

Operating out of Apex Jiu-Jitsu Academy throughout his professional career, Jones also extended his presence into the instructional space. In August 2024, he released a video instructional titled Leglocks For Short Kings — a project that reflected both a defined technical focus on lower-body submissions and a sharp ability to identify and speak directly to a specific segment of the grappling audience.

Corner Work and Collaboration

Alongside his own competitive development, Jones took on a coaching role with French grappler Faris Benlamkadem, working in his corner and contributing to both his preparation and his promotional approach as a competitor.

A Critique of Double Standards

In December 2025, Jones appeared on The White Monster Podcast and used the platform to deliver a pointed critique of what he characterized as a double standard around the concept of "respect" in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His central argument: certain Brazilian competitors and their supporters publicly advocate for respectful conduct while simultaneously engaging in aggressive post-victory taunts and directing obscenities and threats at opponents online — behavior Jones stated he and Faris Benlamkadem had been subjected to personally.

Jones also recounted a specific incident at a Who's Number One event, held prior to December 2025, in which he and Benlamkadem were targeted with obscenities and hostile gestures from opponents before competition had even begun. Rather than calling for a rejection of combative promotional behavior, he drew a meaningful distinction between genuine pre-fight confidence — which carries inherent personal risk for the speaker — and post-victory conduct that carries no such stakes.

The Case for Purposeful Trash Talk

Jones argued that controlled, purposeful trash talk serves a legitimate function in modern jiu-jitsu, generating entertainment value and public interest in the sport as a competitive spectacle. As evidence of the promotional model's practical effectiveness, he pointed to a callout directed at Faris Benlamkadem by Rafael Lovato Jr., framing it as a direct consequence of Benlamkadem's approach and a demonstration that the strategy had succeeded in generating meaningful competitive attention.
