About this video

The Kesa Armlock is a powerful submission technique from the side control position. Here's how to execute it:

  1. Start by isolating your opponent's elbow. If they're resisting or rotating into you, step over their head, trapping their elbow.
  2. If you can't finish on the trapped arm, use your other hand to secure their opposite elbow.
  3. Stretch your torso out to create more torque. Once you have the elbow isolated, stretch out a little bit, squeeze with your legs, puff out your chest, and apply the submission.
  4. If your opponent's arm is too long or too short for a comfortable grip on their elbow, maintain head control by stepping over and squeezing with your heel and knee. This makes it hard for them to move.
  5. Use your free hand to track and secure the opposite elbow. You can use your other hand to ensure the elbow is in the right position.
  6. Once you're in position, execute a twisting motion, hug the arm, use your head and puff out your chest to apply the submission.

Just like the inverted armbar, the Kesa Armlock requires practice to get a feel for the elbow position. Remember, every opponent is different, and every elbow has its own nuances. The more you train this technique, the more effective you'll become at applying it to different opponents. This is a great submission to add to your arsenal if you're looking to expand your attacks from side control.
