Aggressive Backtake

About this video

Aggressive backtake from closed guard:

  1. Start by looking for grips while your partner is in your closed guard. You can choose two hands on one lapel, one on each lapel, or one on the lapel and one on the sleeves.
  2. Once you have the grips, use both of your hands, your back muscles, and both of your knees to swing your partner over and break their posture. Do not pull them towards your head, but over your shoulder.
  3. Immediately readjust to get heavier on their shoulder. The top hand goes deep on the collar for a choke grip, and your elbow comes close to their chest.
  4. Anticipate your partner trying to break the grip with their hand. Stay one step ahead and push their elbow across, trapping their tricep with your bicep. Hug their back and adjust again.
  5. For the back take, keep the inside hook live on their hip. Bring your right foot to the ground and start hip escaping. Before you do that, use both of your grips to twist their torso. This makes it easier for them to fall.
  6. There's pressure on their neck and good control under their armpit. Bring your foot to the ground and hip escape to complete the back take.
  7. Remember to use your legs to feel their weight and the shifting of their weight. This can be used as a tool to control them.
  8. If there's no space to go under their arm, lift your hips and when you come down, go under their arm. One hand goes on the lapel, the other hand on top of this one. Do not overreach as they will be posturing up.
  9. Use both of your hands, your back muscles, and your legs to swing them over your shoulder. Move them in a 45-degree angle over your shoulder. You can also come up to create momentum.
  10. Immediately adjust and simultaneously go in deep with your left hand for a choke grip on the collar. Readjust until you feel comfortable and are putting weight on their shoulder. This prevents them from reacting or posturing freely.
  11. Keep the inside elbow close to their body to prevent them from sliding their head under your grip. Be wary of their movement with their hand. The second they reach for the collar, push across on their elbow and trap the back of their arm with your bicep. Go close to them, readjust and search for grips.
  12. Use your chest and bicep to lock their elbow in place or even push them if you're able to. Pull with your hand to bring your elbow closer to your hip. Twist their torso, making it hard for them to move.
  13. Keep the inside hook live and place the other foot on the ground. Hip escape and get the back.
