About this video

Aggressive collar choke from the closed guard:

  1. Start with your opponent in your closed guard. Look for grips, raising your hips and going under your opponent's elbow to get the first grip. The second grip goes over.
  2. Sit up, come down, and swing your opponent across at a 45-degree angle. Adjust your position, go deep, and bring your opponent towards you.
  3. Use the grip on the bottom of the lapel and your forearm to bring your opponent's elbow across. Change your grip and finish by pushing.
  4. Use your foot on your opponent's thigh to get a feel of where his body is and to help you adjust. Get heavy on his back.
  5. Reach over with your hand and get the back. Twist and achieve back control. Keep the grip on the neck and the lapel, or the fabric of his armpit, or even the other side of the lapel on the neck.
  6. Try to hook your right foot on your opponent's bicep. You can do this by either pulling down on him and hooking, or if you have his wrist in your hand, stretch his arm out and hook over.
  7. Move your left foot across the hip, and sit to bring your opponent to his side. Do not let him go in the hole like a bow and arrow choke because you still don't have the grip for the choke. Fish for the grip now.
  8. Use your hand for basing and start adjusting until you feel comfortable. Your feet should be clamped together, and your knees should be squeezing his torso.
  9. Get comfortable, the hand you were basing with is going to come under his ear, and under his jaw, across his neck, and feed the lapel from your hand that's inside to the hand that's coming in.
  10. Once you're comfortable and tight on the neck, release the grip and go to the opposite lapel. Now you have the opposite lapel with your left hand and the neck with your right hand.
  11. Stretch or push down on his right lapel, and the hand that's attacking the neck curls a little bit, and bring your elbow to the side of your body, or to your hips. Keep your shoulder close to his head, and close the distance. Use your back muscles to pull, not just your biceps.
  12. If you miss the lapel because you can't reach or find it, or it's caught between your legs, or it's too short, or your opponent has it in his hand, bring the hand that's inside over, and go under your forearm to finish the choke.
