Executing the Capizzi Lock as a counter to the Underhook Smash Pass:

  1. Recognize the Underhook Smash Pass as a common position in No-Gi and Gi grappling, which can be countered effectively with the Capizzi Lock.
  2. When flattened out by the Smash Pass, create an angle by threading your legs through and extending them to alleviate pressure on your upper body.
  3. To initiate the Capizzi Lock, bring your heel to your buttocks, which will expose your opponent's foot.
  4. Wind up your leg to reach and capture your opponent's foot, securing it by placing your toes on your opposite calf.
  5. Extend your foot to apply the calf slicer submission, which is a powerful and surprising attack.
  6. Encourage your opponent to lift their leg by creating movement, which will present the opportunity to apply the lock.
  7. Note that the effectiveness of the lock may vary depending on the relative size of you and your opponent, as well as any injuries you may have.
  8. Practice the technique gently and with control, starting with smaller partners and progressing to larger ones.
  9. Respect the power of the submission and be cautious not to injure your training partners, especially their knees and hips.
  10. As you and your partners become more familiar with the move, you can apply it more quickly and with the appropriate pressure during live rolling.
