About this video
Intercepting the Berimbolo to apply a heel hook involves a drill where both partners practice the technique on each other. The key is to gain control by breaking the symmetry of the position.
- Start with both partners' heels interlocked and each person grabbing around the other's hip. This position is crucial for levering the opponent during back takes.
- The goal is to control the opponent's leg and hip to break the symmetry. If you can turn their hip by levering their leg, you gain control.
- Visual focus is essential. You should be able to see the opponent's face through the side. If you can't, it's impossible to curl your foot and apply the technique correctly.
- Once the opponent's hip passes over yours, and you can see their face, your hook can frame their leg properly, allowing you to walk on the heel hook without assistance.
- Practice the drill by extending your leg to feed the movement, then the partner does the same. This back-and-forth action helps both partners understand the mechanics of the move.
- Remember to extend your legs after each turn to reset the position, maintaining tight control and symmetry.
- When climbing for the back, the opponent will typically put their shoulders to the ground and push away. This is the moment to apply the heel hook or pursue a foot lock.
- Ensure you maintain visual contact with the opponent's face to properly position your knee and apply the hook effectively.
- Repeat the drill, alternating turns, to master the technique and add it to your arsenal of moves.
