Matt Hume served as Barnett's primary early grappling and MMA coach, and the two built a shared reputation as elite leg lock practitioners at a time when such techniques were rarely systematized in mainstream combat sports. Erik Paulson, whom Barnett has described as his second MMA coach, is a recognized leg lock specialist in his own right and became central to Barnett's ongoing submission grappling development.

Together, these coaching relationships produced a grappling style rooted in catch wrestling principles rather than BJJ's positional hierarchy and credentialing structure. Barnett absorbed a game emphasizing takedowns, top control, and submission attacks from dominant positions — a framework that would later inform his pointed critiques of modern grappling culture. Crucially, this path meant Barnett carried no formal BJJ belt rank for much of his competitive career, even as his technical ability operated at the sport's highest levels.

Barnett's entry into the 2009 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship was neither planned nor conventional. Speaking on the Matt Serra podcast, Barnett recounted that he contacted the tournament organizer directly after his friend Victor Webster expressed interest in competing — Webster agreeing to enter only on the condition that Barnett would also compete. Barnett accepted, flying in from professional wrestling work in Japan with minimal preparation and, by his own account, no formal BJJ training in any traditional sense.

The Honorary Black Belt

The eligibility problem was immediate: the IBJJF's black belt division required, logically, a black belt — and Barnett held none. Chris Haueter resolved the situation by providing Barnett with an honorary black belt specifically to satisfy the IBJJF's divisional requirements. Competing in the black belt ultra heavyweight bracket on November 8, 2009, Barnett proceeded to win the entire tournament, defeating Bruno Paulista in the final.

In discussing the result, Barnett was characteristically direct. He attributed his success not to BJJ preparation but to his catch wrestling background and the years of submission grappling work accumulated under Hume and Paulson. The title arrived not through the traditional BJJ development path but despite having bypassed it almost entirely.

Erik Paulson formally promoted Barnett to BJJ black belt on December 19, 2009, roughly six weeks after the tournament. Barnett was subsequently promoted to second-degree black belt by Paulson and Rigan Machado, though the precise timing and circumstances of that promotion remain less clearly documented.

The 2009 No-Gi Worlds title run carried consequences well beyond Barnett's personal record. An elite grappler with no legitimate BJJ black belt had entered a black belt division using an honorary belt issued at the event, won the entire tournament, and walked away. The IBJJF responded swiftly.

Beginning in 2010, the organization required competitors to formally register their black belt rank and lineage as a condition of eligibility — closing the gap that Barnett had, inadvertently or otherwise, exposed. Within the BJJ community, this requirement became informally known as the "Barnett rule," a label that has persisted in discussions of IBJJF eligibility ever since.

The episode crystallized a genuine tension within the sport: BJJ's credentialing infrastructure had no clean mechanism for classifying elite grapplers who had developed their skills through catch wrestling or MMA rather than traditional academy lineages. Barnett's case made that gap impossible to ignore.

Barnett has been one of the most consistent and prominent public voices for catch wrestling, arguing across multiple platforms that its principles translate more directly to MMA than conventional BJJ. In July 2025, he stated publicly that the catch wrestling approach is superior to BJJ in MMA contexts — a position he has held and articulated repeatedly — and extended his advocacy into organizational form by operating his own catch wrestling promotion.

Criticism of Blue and Purple Belt Prize Money

In a September 2026 conversation on the Matt Serra podcast, Barnett directed pointed criticism at the practice of paying prize money to blue and purple belt competitors at submission grappling events. His argument was direct: lower belt practitioners have not reached professional status and do not merit compensation on the basis of skill alone. In his words: "You're not a professional... No you don't deserve to get paid. Now if you can sell tickets and you want a cut of those tickets, fine. I guess you're a draw. But your skills, your capabilities, you are not a pro. You are not top level. Why do you think you deserve money?" He drew a contrast with his own competitive era, in which high-profile athletes — "your last name could be Gracie or anything" — would enter available tournaments simply to test themselves, without expectation of recognition or payment.

Criticism of the IBJJF Ruleset

Barnett also trained his criticism on the IBJJF's ruleset, identifying the reaping rule and inconsistent advantage calls as structural problems that reward passivity over submission-oriented grappling. He extended that argument to guard retention and passing defense used as primary competitive strategies, writing on social media that such approaches amount to glorified stalling and should not be rewarded in competition scoring: "Doing nothing but recovering guard or stopping passing should not win you anything — it's a defensive reaction and doesn't advance towards submitting or scoring, only defensive prevention."

In September 2026, Barnett engaged in a sustained public argument over the origins and ownership of modern leg lock methodology. His core claim was direct: catch wrestling practitioners — including himself, Matt Hume, and Erik Paulson — had developed and taught comprehensive leg lock systems decades before the submission grappling community's contemporary boom in the technique.

The Technical Distinction

The distinction Barnett drew was specific. Speaking on a podcast, he characterized the modern leg lock movement as operating within a bottom-oriented framework — pulling guard and attacking legs as part of a sweep-based game — rather than representing a genuine departure from BJJ's positional tendencies. In his words: "None of them take anyone down. None of them maintain top control and none of them attack legs from on top. ... you're just BJJing, you're IBJJFing leg locks. You're not actually becoming actual leg lockers." He credited himself, Hume, and Paulson as practitioners who attacked legs from top position as part of a holistic system built around takedowns and dominant control.

Barnett was not entirely dismissive. He acknowledged genuine innovation within the modern leg lock movement, noting "some new entries, some new approaches" inventive enough to incorporate into his own coaching curriculum. His critique was not that nothing new had emerged, but that much of what was being marketed as new had already appeared in instructional material he and his coaches had released years earlier: "A lot of this stuff I'm like, we already did that... I already taught DVDs on this. You're the new hot stuff, so you're going to make the money on it, but we already did this."

Renaming Established Holds

Barnett also directed specific criticism at BJJ practitioners for renaming established catch wrestling holds: "BJJ guys are claiming catch wrestling holds and renaming them constantly. ... I'm glad you just found something that's a hundred years old and it's been around since before you even knew what a BJJ was. Please keep using it. But it's also called this, not the wackadoodle cookie monster blaster or whatever you thought you could name it." On social media around the same period, he reiterated: "Matt Hume, me, and Erik Paulson have been doing these kinds of attacks for decades, if you want to learn them, come to us."

In October 2026, former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson stated in a conversation with Ariel Helwani that he would support banning both oblique kicks and heel hooks from MMA. Johnson argued that such techniques can ruin careers and referenced a heel hook incident involving Mikey Musumeci at a ONE Championship event in Bangkok, Thailand, in which competitor Gantumur Bayanduuren suffered severe injuries — a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus, along with a broken ankle — that ONE Championship's Chatri Sityodtong described as potentially career-ending.

The Mechanical Distinction

Barnett pushed back publicly via a post on X, drawing a precise mechanical distinction between the two techniques Johnson had grouped together. His argument: oblique kicks deliver sudden, concentrated force to the knee before a fighter can mount any meaningful defense, transferring impact through cartilage, tendons, muscles, ligaments, and bone almost instantaneously. Heel hooks, by contrast, apply rotational torque progressively — in a manner visible to both the athlete receiving the technique and the referee — affording reaction time that oblique kicks do not. In his own words: "A heel hook also concerns multiple joints (Ankle and Knee) allowing multiple points at which pressure may be spread across and not in as rapid and destructive a manner in most all case in comparison to the oblique kick. In many cases, the ankle likely is the first point of injury and very recoverable."

Barnett's position was not a blanket defense of heel hooks in all contexts. He differentiated between amateur and professional competition, expressing support for heel hook restrictions in amateur events on safety grounds while opposing categorical bans in professional settings where athletes have the experience and knowledge to understand the risks they accept.

A Personal Dimension

Barnett also noted a personal dimension to his disagreement with Johnson's stance. Having trained under Matt Hume long before Hume worked with Johnson, Barnett found Johnson's categorical opposition to heel hooks — techniques central to the system Hume had built — particularly striking. He was careful to clarify that his objection was not to Johnson's personal choice to avoid the technique, but to the extrapolation of that personal preference into broad regulation for the sport.
