Shoulder Of Justice
Position
The Shoulder of Justice is a crushing pressure variation of side control where the top player drives their crossface shoulder into the bottom player's jaw or face, maximizing discomfort and control. It is used to demoralize the opponent, limit their breathing and movement, and create openings for submissions or transitions.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Drive your crossface shoulder downward into the opponent's jaw/cheek by sprawling your legs back and dropping your hips.
- · Keep your chest-to-chest connection tight with no space, using body weight rather than muscular effort for pressure.
- · Position your hips low and angled toward the opponent's head to maximize the shoulder's downward force.
- · Anticipate the opponent framing against your neck or hip by swimming through frames before settling your weight.
- · Control the far-side arm with an underhook or wrist control to prevent defensive frames and escapes.
Execution
- 1 From standard side control, secure a deep crossface by threading your arm under their head and gripping their far shoulder or the mat.
- 2 Walk your feet away from the opponent and sprawl your hips low to the ground, shifting your weight forward onto your shoulder.
- 3 Turn your shoulder blade so the bony point of your shoulder drives directly into the opponent's jaw or cheekbone.
- 4 Use your underhook or far-arm control to block their hip escape while maintaining constant downward chest pressure.
- 5 Hold the position, forcing reactions—when they turn away or push, transition to mount, north-south, or available submissions.
Common mistakes
- × Staying too high on your toes with hips elevated, which reduces pressure and makes you easier to bridge and roll.
- × Placing the shoulder on the chest instead of the jaw/face, which is uncomfortable but fails to generate the signature crushing effect that restricts breathing and head movement.
- × Neglecting far-arm control, allowing the bottom player to frame on your hip and shrimp to re-guard.
