Felipe Silva

Felipe Silva, known throughout the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community by his nickname "Bocão," was born on September 22, 1977, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Raised in Barra da Tijuca — one of Rio's most recognizable neighborhoods — Felipe grew up in modest circumstances, with his father working as a janitor. Those financial constraints might have kept him off the mats entirely were it not for a pivotal opportunity that arrived when he was eleven years old.

At that age, Felipe began training at a local gym called Espaço Vital, run by Totila Pitoco Jordan — an academy that would go on to produce numerous significant figures in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Recognizing that financial hardship should never be a barrier to training, the AlfaBarra members club extended Felipe a full scholarship covering his costs from white belt through black belt. That institutional support proved transformative, giving him the consistency and stability to develop into a serious practitioner and competitor. The community he found at AlfaBarra became the bedrock of his entire jiu-jitsu journey.

Felipe's years at AlfaBarra introduced him to Rogério Poggio, a relationship that would shape both his athletic and professional trajectory. Poggio recognized Felipe's potential early — while Felipe was still a blue belt in 1997, he invited him to serve as an assistant coach in the academy's children's program. Taking on instructional responsibilities at that stage of a belt journey is uncommon, and the appointment reflected the deep trust his coaches already placed in him.

From the inception of Infight, Felipe committed himself fully to the team, becoming one of its most active and recognizable competitors throughout the 2000s and 2010s. His loyalty to his original instructors never wavered. In December 2002, that dedication was formally recognized when Totila Pitoco Jordan and Rogério Poggio jointly promoted him to the rank of black belt — a promotion that carried particular weight given that both coaches who had guided him from the very beginning were present to award it.

Throughout his career, Felipe Silva competed in the Peso Leve division at 76 kilograms (167 lbs), maintaining the conditioning and technical sharpness required to stay competitive at that weight across multiple decades. As of 2024, Felipe Silva serves as the Head Coach Instructor of the US Army Combatives Course at Twin Wolves Martial in Texas. The US Army Combatives program is a standardized hand-to-hand combat curriculum demanding not only technical mastery but also the ability to deliver effective instruction to military personnel with diverse physical backgrounds. His role within it represents a significant chapter in his professional evolution.
