Seif Houmine

Seif-Eddine Houmine was born on June 24, 1988, in Oujda, Morocco, where he spent his formative years before relocating to France. His athletic gifts surfaced early — he demonstrated a natural aptitude for hammer throwing during lower secondary school, a pursuit that hinted at an innate affinity for power-based sports. His father's restrictions brought that first foray into competitive athletics to an abrupt halt, establishing an early pattern of interrupted sporting pursuits.

Undeterred, Houmine went on to practice both judo and rugby at a national level during his high school years, excelling simultaneously in two disciplines that demanded very different physical and technical skill sets. Once again, however, he was compelled to step away from both. Rather than diminish his development, these disruptions forged a versatile athletic foundation — one built on power, coordination, and competitive exposure — that would later prove invaluable on the jiu-jitsu mats.

At 17, Houmine made a pivotal decision: he moved to France to pursue his academic studies, a transition that reshaped the entire trajectory of his life. It was not until the age of 21 — relatively late by the standards of elite competitors — that he first encountered Brazilian jiu-jitsu, setting in motion a journey that would carry him to the pinnacle of the sport.

Houmine's introduction to Brazilian jiu-jitsu in France began under the guidance of Jackson Paulo Jacinto, whose instruction provided the technical foundations that would underpin his entire game. Recognizing both the depth of the sport and his own potential within it, Houmine transitioned to GF Team in Paris — known in France as GF Team France — where he spent the formative years of his competitive development.

Colored Belt Career

Training under Mathias Jardin and Zakaria Arhab, Houmine steadily progressed through the belt ranks, building a competition record that offered early evidence of his emerging capabilities. He claimed gold at the IBJJF Paris Open in 2014 at blue belt and backed it up with a gold medal at the IBJJF European Open that same year. He continued performing at a high level through the brown belt stage, earning podium finishes at the IBJJF European Open in 2017.

Black Belt Promotion

In April 2018, after years of dedicated training, Houmine received his black belt — a milestone that marked not an endpoint, but the beginning of his most accomplished competitive chapter. Competing in the ultra-heavyweight division (+100.50 kg / +222.0 lbs), he established himself as one of GF Team France's top representatives on the international circuit, bringing a physical profile honed through years of diverse athletic training to bear against the world's best grapplers.

The defining moment of Houmine's competitive career arrived at the 2024 IBJJF World Championships, where he entered the ultra-heavyweight division of the adult black belt bracket. In the semi-finals, he was defeated by Yatan Bueno, a result that initially placed Houmine on the third-place podium rather than the top step.

In the months following the event, however, the outcome of the ultra-heavyweight division was dramatically altered. Yatan Bueno was stripped of his title following a doping violation, and the original medalists across the division were disqualified. As a consequence of these rulings, Houmine was elevated to the position of IBJJF World Champion — a title that carries the same historical weight regardless of the circumstances by which it was conferred.

A Landmark for African BJJ

The significance of this achievement extended well beyond the individual level. Houmine became the first Moroccan athlete ever to win an IBJJF World Championship title in the adult black belt division — a landmark moment for the country and for the broader North African BJJ community. He is also recognized as only the second African-born athlete to claim this honor, following Joao Roque of Angola, who won the title in 1997. The nearly three-decade gap between African world champions at the black belt level underscores the magnitude of what Houmine's achievement represents for the continent.

Black Belt Debut and Early Results

The year 2018 — the same year Houmine received his black belt — proved immediately productive on the competition scene. He claimed gold at both the ACBJJ World Championship and the ACBJJ European Championship in No-Gi, signaling that his transition to black belt competition would require no adjustment period. The performances announced him as a force in the ultra-heavyweight division from the outset.

Sustained Elite-Level Consistency

In the years that followed, Houmine continued to accumulate results against elite opposition. He reached the podium at the IBJJF European Championship in both 2019 and 2023, and secured a second-place finish at the IBJJF European Open in 2020 — performances that underscore his durability as a top-level competitor across a sustained period. Over the course of his career, he has compiled a competition record of 50 wins and 17 losses, a body of work that reflects both his consistency and the caliber of opposition he has regularly faced.
