North-South Choke Defense
Escape
Defending the north-south choke: keep an answer-the-phone frame on the choking side, deny the attacker settling their weight and chin position, and walk your legs toward the open side to change the angle before the choke tightens.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The choke needs their chest settled over your head — early frames prevent the seal
- · Your trapped arm positioned by your ear keeps space at the carotid
- · Angle-walking toward the open side unwinds their finishing alignment
Execution
- 1 As they spin toward north-south, get the near hand to your ear (answer the phone)
- 2 Bridge slightly and keep the elbow of the framing arm inside
- 3 Walk your legs and swing your hips toward the unlocked side
- 4 Turn belly-down or recover guard as their chest connection breaks
Common mistakes
- × Pulling the framing arm out too early, letting their chest settle on the neck
- × Staying flat and waiting out the squeeze — good north-south chokes don't loosen
Use it against
The North-South Choke Defense is an answer to these.
