Marco Mendes was born on January 25, 2003, in Brasília, the federal capital of Brazil, but spent his formative years in Teresina, the capital of Piauí state, approximately 1,000 km to the north. His introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 11 was entirely unplanned — driven not by personal interest but by a desire to accompany his older brother, who wanted to try a trial class of the Arte Suave. With no prior exposure to martial arts and no particular ambition on the mats, the young Mendes stepped onto the mats out of sibling loyalty alone.

His initial impression of the sport was lukewarm. He continued training primarily to keep his brother company, yet the discipline and camaraderie of the mats gradually cultivated a genuine appreciation for the art. Those first steps were taken at a social project in Teresina, where a purple belt affiliated with Quartel-General (QG) da Luta served as his first instructor. Mendes trained at that satellite academy for nearly two years, laying the technical and mental foundations that would eventually carry him to the sport's highest levels.

After nearly two years at the satellite project, Mendes transitioned to the Quartel-General (QG) da Luta headquarters, coming under the direct instruction of Major Oliveira. The more structured environment accelerated his development significantly. By the time Mendes had earned his orange belt, he had committed to a full-time training schedule with a clear professional ambition: he wanted grappling to be his career.

A pivotal development during this period was the beginning of his training under Livio Ribeiro, one of Major Oliveira's most accomplished students. Ribeiro's technical guidance elevated Mendes' game considerably, but it was his connections beyond Teresina that truly opened new horizons. Through a relationship with Ares, Ribeiro arranged for the 15-year-old Mendes to travel to the United States for the first time, attending an Ares team camp held in preparation for the IBJJF World Championships. It was during that camp that Mendes first crossed paths with Javier Gomez — an encounter that would prove to be one of the most consequential of his life.

Mendes returned to the United States the following year for an extended stay focused on preparation for the Pan American and World tournaments. That time in North America allowed him to develop a deep and lasting bond with Javier Gomez and the wider Gomez family — a connection that grew well beyond the mats. The Gomez family formally proposed to adopt the 16-year-old Brazilian, a gesture that initially surprised Mendes but which he ultimately accepted, recognizing the opportunity it represented both personally and professionally.

The decision marked a life-altering turning point. Mendes relocated to California, where Javier Gomez — an accomplished BJJ black belt — assumed the role of both primary instructor and adoptive family member. Beginning in 2019, Mendes joined Aspire To Inspire, the jiu-jitsu association founded and led by Gomez. The story of a Brazilian teenager adopted by an American jiu-jitsu family stands as one of the more extraordinary personal narratives in the BJJ community, illustrating how the sport can forge bonds that transcend athletic training entirely.

During his colored belt years, Mendes carried a dual affiliation that reflected the organic, relationship-driven nature of his career. Javier Gomez had played a direct role in helping Dream Art and its leader Isaque Bahiense establish their presence in Houston, Texas, and it was through Gomez's network that Mendes developed a working connection with the squad — most notably through joint training camps ahead of major tournaments. The resulting Aspire To Inspire / Dream Art identity was collaborative rather than organizational, born from genuine relationships rather than any formal team transfer.

Competing at the brown belt level, Mendes established himself as one of the best in his generation, capturing gold at both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2023. Those results confirmed what his camp had long believed: he was ready for the sport's highest level. On June 3, 2022, that transition was made official in the most dramatic fashion possible — Javier Gomez and Isaque Bahiense promoted Mendes to black belt while he stood atop the IBJJF World Championship podium, combining sporting triumph and personal milestone into a single defining moment.

Mendes' competitive résumé reflects elite-level talent that manifested early and developed consistently across every rank. At the juvenile level in 2019, he captured both the IBJJF World Championship title in the gi and the World Championship NOGI title — a remarkable double that announced his arrival on the international scene. He also reached the podium at the 2019 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship as a juvenile, reinforcing that his World titles were no aberration.

As he progressed through the purple and brown belt divisions, Mendes continued to collect hardware at the sport's most prestigious events. His brown belt campaign was particularly dominant, culminating in back-to-back IBJJF gold at the Pan Championship and World Championship in 2023. He also demonstrated no-gi versatility, earning podium finishes at the IBJJF World Championship NOGI and IBJJF Pan Championship NOGI across multiple belt levels.

At black belt, Mendes wasted little time making his mark. In 2023, he claimed gold at the IBJJF American Nationals and followed that with 3rd place finishes at both the IBJJF World Championship NOGI and the IBJJF Pan Championship NOGI — results that positioned him as a genuine contender in the Peso Pena division (70 kg / 154.5 lbs). Representing Brazil, Mendes carries a story that spans two continents and multiple coaching relationships, competing as a product of both the grassroots social project scene in Teresina and the high-performance training environment he found in California.
