Diego Oliveira Batista was born on October 2, 1998, in Parintins, a remote municipality in the far east of Amazonas state, nestled near the Amazon River in Brazil. He spent his early childhood there before relocating to Manaus at age 10, moving with his father to the state capital — a move that would set the stage for one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's most decorated careers.

The spark that drew Diego toward combat sports came from a cousin involved in mixed martial arts. During his pre-teen years, Diego admired his family member's dedication to fighting and harbored his own ambitions of competing in MMA. His cousin's advice, however, proved pivotal: before developing any striking, Diego should first build a solid grappling foundation, as mastery of the ground game was essential to success inside the cage. That counsel directed Oliveira squarely toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In 2012, at the age of 13, Diego acted on that guidance and enrolled at a jiu-jitsu school run by Arley Silva, a black belt who operated a social project near Pato's neighborhood. Under Silva's instruction, Oliveira advanced through the early ranks to green belt before the social project shuttered, leaving him without a coach. Unwilling to step away from the sport, he transitioned to the Nabil JJ academy, led by Nabil Abdel Aziz.

Between the ages of 14 and 15, Oliveira began competing in the absolute divisions of local professional tournaments, earning modest cash prizes that helped cover household expenses and contribute to his father's rent. These early forays into professional competition instilled a practical, results-driven mentality in Diego — a clear-eyed understanding of what it meant to pursue jiu-jitsu not merely as a sport, but as a livelihood.

The defining turning point in Diego Oliveira's development came when, still a blue belt under Nabil Abdel Aziz, he made the audacious decision to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the IBJJF Rio Open — without a return ticket. His plan was simple but bold: find a foothold in a jiu-jitsu hub, whether Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, where elite training and high-level competition were far more accessible than in Manaus.

At the event, the 15-year-old Oliveira reconnected with Cicero Costha, a renowned coach he had previously encountered in Manaus, and candidly laid out his ambitions. Costha recognized the young athlete's potential and extended an invitation to join the PSLPB Cicero Costha colored belts program in São Paulo, offering lodging, meals, and access to elite-level training. Oliveira accepted without hesitation. Around 2015 to 2016, he made the move to the PSLPB fighter house alongside his Nabil JJ teammate Hygor Brito, the two making the transition together.

Colored Belt Dominance

Within the structured, fiercely competitive environment of Costha's program, Diego Pato rapidly emerged as one of the most feared light-featherweight colored belt competitors on the international circuit. His blue belt campaign delivered gold at the IBJJF South American Championship in 2016, followed by CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro titles in 2017. At purple belt, he swept the major events with IBJJF World Championship gold in both gi and no-gi formats in 2017, along with European Open and Pan Championship titles, and a further Brazilian Nationals crown in 2018.

His brown belt year in 2019 brought yet another commanding title sweep — the IBJJF World Championship, Pan Championship, European Open, Brazilian Nationals, and AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro — confirming his status as the undisputed dominant force in his weight class across every belt level. Cicero Costha promoted Diego to black belt in June 2019, marking the culmination of one of the most decorated colored belt careers in the modern era of the sport.

Diego "Pato" Oliveira's transition to black belt proved seamless. He stepped into the elite ranks of the under 66kg division and immediately imposed himself as a top-tier global competitor. His 2021 season stands as one of the most dominant single-year performances the division has witnessed: gold at the IBJJF World Championship in both gi and no-gi formats, the IBJJF Pan Championship title, the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro, and the EUG 155 lbs GP No-Gi — all within a single competitive calendar year.

Dream Art and Continued Title Pursuit

In January 2022, Diego announced his move to Dream Art, a São Paulo-based professional jiu-jitsu squad, opening a new chapter in his career. The transition brought no drop in output. He added a second IBJJF World Championship gi title in 2023 and a third in 2024, while also claiming a second IBJJF World No-Gi Championship crown in 2023. On the no-gi and submission grappling circuits, his performances at the ADCC World Championships earned a bronze medal in 2022 and a silver medal in 2024 — results that firmly established his credentials at the sport's most prestigious no-gi stage.

His 2024 season further reinforced his elite standing, encompassing IBJJF Pan Championship gold, the IBJJF The Crown GP title, and an AJP Grand Slam victory in Tokyo. The 2025 IBJJF European Championship delivered yet another gold medal, adding to an already exceptional international record.

As of July 24, 2025, Diego Oliveira was announced as a wildcard competitor representing ATOS at CJI 2, competing in the under 66kg category — a continued affirmation of his place among the very best in professional jiu-jitsu competition.
