Born on October 27, 2001, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Frank Cespedes showed a competitive drive from an early age. His first organized sport was soccer, which introduced him to structured athletic rivalry and sharpened his instincts for competition. However, soccer's team-based nature created a disconnect — individual effort did not always produce individual outcomes — and that limitation left Cespedes searching for something more personally demanding.

At 12, he found his answer in martial arts, joining a local gym where he trained both boxing and jiu-jitsu under Michael Ceijas. The striking work gave him a broad martial foundation, but it was the grappling side of training that quickly claimed his full attention. The chess-like problem-solving of jiu-jitsu, combined with the direct individual accountability it requires, was precisely the outlet Cespedes had been looking for.

After his formative years under Michael Ceijas, Frank Cespedes moved on to train with Hector Vasquez, whose program offered a training environment populated with competitors of a similar age and competitive mindset. That peer group proved instrumental in accelerating his development as a tournament athlete.

Cespedes began under Vasquez as a grey belt and remained under his instruction through every subsequent rank up to black belt — a continuity of mentorship that speaks to both the quality of Vasquez's program and Cespedes's commitment to the process. To fully invest in his grappling ambitions, Cespedes made a defining decision after his first year of high school: he enrolled in an online education program to complete his secondary schooling, freeing his days for a full-time regimen of two to three training sessions. The sacrifice left little doubt about his priorities.

The dedication produced results. On May 18, 2021, Hector Vasquez awarded Frank Cespedes his black belt — the culmination of a colored belt career that had already seen him compete at the highest levels of IBJJF competition. Cespedes competes as a member of Alliance, one of the most decorated teams in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and fights in the Peso Galo division (57.50 kg / 127.0 lbs).

Long before earning his black belt, Cespedes had already established himself as one of the most formidable young grapplers in the United States. His juvenile career produced back-to-back podium finishes at the IBJJF World Championship — a runner-up finish in 2017 followed by a gold medal in 2018. He also earned third-place finishes at the IBJJF Pan Championship at the juvenile level in both 2017 and 2018, demonstrating elite-level consistency across multiple formats and competitive cycles.

That momentum carried seamlessly into his colored belt years. At purple belt, Cespedes claimed the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship title in 2019, confirming his ability to perform at the top level in both gi and no-gi formats. His brown belt campaign was equally commanding, with a Pan Championship gold in 2020 followed by a No-Gi Pan Championship title in 2021. Across multiple belt levels, formats, and years, Cespedes did not merely participate in elite competition — he dominated it, building the competitive experience that would carry him confidently into the black belt ranks.

Cespedes entered the black belt division with the credibility of a decorated colored belt career and wasted little time making his presence felt. In 2022, he won the IBJJF American Nationals, securing his first major title at the sport's highest competitive level and signaling a seamless transition into the senior ranks. That same year, he reached the podium at the IBJJF Pan Championship with a third-place finish — a result he replicated at the 2023 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, reaffirming the consistency that has defined his career at every level.

Representing the USA and competing for Alliance, Cespedes operates in the Peso Galo division, one of the most technically demanding weight classes on the IBJJF circuit. His trajectory — from a Las Vegas kid seeking individual competition to a black belt performing on the sport's biggest stages — reflects the focus and sacrifice that shaped every stage of his development.
