Nolan Stuart was born on July 14, 2002, in La Mirada, California, to a Brazilian-American mother and an American father. When he was six years old, his parents separated, and he relocated with his mother to Brea, California — a move that would quietly shape the trajectory of his life. His mother's family maintained a working farm in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and throughout his childhood, Stuart spent his summers there immersed in farm life and his Brazilian heritage. Those seasonal visits forged a genuine cultural identity, drawing him toward the language, food, and traditions of his mother's homeland.

As a natural extension of that connection, Stuart embraced football (soccer) for several years — a sport deeply woven into Brazilian life. Yet it was a family story that ultimately pointed him toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His maternal grandfather, Plautino Braga, had competed as a vale tudo fighter in his youth, and through him, the young Stuart grew up aware of no-holds-barred fighting and the martial art most closely associated with it. That early awareness planted a seed that would soon take root just a few blocks from home.

The Founding Years at Brea Jiu-Jitsu

When a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio opened within walking distance of his mother's house in Brea, ten-year-old Nolan Stuart signed up and became one of the founding members of the kids class at Brea Jiu-Jitsu, under Dan Lukehart. What began as a neighborhood convenience became one of the most formative relationships of his athletic career. Lukehart served as Stuart's primary mentor throughout his entire belt progression — guiding him from white belt through every colored rank to black belt — an unbroken mentorship spanning more than a decade.

A Curriculum Beyond the Mat

At age eleven, Stuart enrolled in a distinctive after-school program that Coach Dan had launched, one that extended well beyond conventional martial arts instruction. The curriculum was remarkably broad: chess, trumpet, science, homework tutoring, video production, additional BJJ practice, match analysis, and structured coaching in jiu-jitsu itself. In a December 2023 interview with BJJ Heroes, Stuart credited this program as a pivotal factor in the depth of his development — both on and off the mat.

By age thirteen, Stuart had transitioned into the adult BJJ classes at Brea Jiu-Jitsu, where the elevated level of competition accelerated his growth. Around that same time, he began structured strength and conditioning work with Eric Arevalo. Despite his growing success in competition, his coaching team deliberately limited his tournament schedule to a handful of events per year — a measured approach designed to prevent burnout and sustain focus over the long term.

As a younger competitor, Stuart favored guard pulling, drawn to the dynamic and technical demands of the guard game. Recognizing that a more complete grappling base would serve him at higher levels, he began wrestling during middle school at a local wrestling club — a deliberate investment in his overall game rather than a departure from jiu-jitsu.

The wrestling club introduced him to coaches who would remain part of his development for years. Through those sessions, he connected with Fergus McTaggart, Brian Schleuter, and Nick Weissinger, all of whom later served as his high school wrestling coaches. Early in his wrestling career, Omar Gaitan also made meaningful contributions to his foundation on the feet. The combination of BJJ and wrestling created a well-rounded grappler whose guard-oriented instincts were sharpened by a growing command of takedowns and wrestling pressure — a balance that proved essential as he stepped into adult-level competition.

Kids and Juvenile Dominance

Nolan Stuart's trajectory through the colored belts was defined by consistent, high-level performances at IBJJF competitions. In 2016, as a child competitor, he claimed gold at the IBJJF Kids International. By 2018, he had added both an IBJJF American Nationals Kids title and gold at the IBJJF World Championship in the juvenile division — an early signal that his methodical development was producing results on the sport's biggest stages.

Seamless Transition to Adult Competition

When Stuart turned eighteen and entered the adult category, the transition was seamless. He competed at the 2020 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship at blue belt, won six consecutive matches, and claimed gold — an emphatic statement in his first adult IBJJF appearance. He continued building at purple belt, earning gold at the IBJJF American Nationals in 2022.

His brown belt year in 2023 proved to be his most accomplished at the colored belt level. He returned to the Pan Championship and claimed gold once more at the 2023 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, then advanced to the final of the IBJJF World Championship, where he earned silver. Across kids, juvenile, and adult divisions, Stuart demonstrated the kind of sustained podium presence that reflects years of deliberate, well-paced development under Dan Lukehart's guidance.

In June 2023, Dan Lukehart promoted Nolan Stuart to the rank of black belt — the culmination of a journey that had begun on those same mats in Brea more than a decade earlier. The promotion closed a loop that was as much about mentorship and personal growth as it was about technical mastery, with Lukehart having been the constant through every stage of Stuart's development.

Even before receiving his black belt, Stuart had taken his first steps as a coach. While still a brown belt, he launched his coaching career at the Sekton Academy alongside Sean Roberts, drawing on the teaching habits instilled years earlier through Coach Dan's after-school program. The emphasis on instruction embedded in his training since age eleven translated naturally into a coaching identity.

In his first year as a black belt, Stuart competed at the Jiu-Jitsu CON International in 2023 and claimed first place — a strong debut at the sport's highest rank. He competes in the Meio Pesado division at 88.30 kg (195.0 lbs), bringing the technical foundation and competitive experience of a lifelong grappler to every appearance on the mat.
