About this video
Executing a lapel bow and arrow choke when the opponent defends by pulling down their lapel:
- Start with your left hand on the opponent's collar on top, as if going for a bow and arrow or regular lapel choke.
- If the opponent defends by pulling down on their lapel, do not waste energy trying to force the choke.
- Use their lapel-pulling action to open their collar and grab it with your other hand from underneath, pulling out the slack and bringing it behind their neck.
- While doing this, maintain the threat of the choke with your initial hand to distract the opponent.
- Pass the pulled lapel to the choking hand above the opponent's shoulder, ensuring you do not pass it underneath as it will not be effective.
- Grab the lapel with the same grip as before, above the shoulder, to set up the choke.
- Proceed to finish the choke by turning, escaping your leg, and placing it in front of you to stretch out the opponent.
- If the opponent scrambles, you can cross your feet, squeeze your knees, and pull to finish the choke.
This technique leverages the opponent's lapel defense to set up a more secure choke, using their own gi against them.
