Collar Choke Defense
Escape
Gi only
Defending deep collar chokes (sliding/cross collar, bow and arrow): win the grip fight before depth, protect the second hand's entry, and tuck the chin while stripping the first grip — a single deep collar grip is the fire alarm, not the fire.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The first deep grip sets the choke — strip it before the second hand enters
- · Chin tuck and shoulder shrug buy time but don't finish the escape
- · Turning toward the choking thumb-side unwinds the collar's bite
Execution
- 1 Two-on-one grip break the deep collar hand the moment it lands
- 2 Deny the second grip by controlling that sleeve or wrist
- 3 If both grips land, tuck the chin, shrug, and turn toward the first grip's thumb
- 4 Clear the top-side pressure and recover posture or position
Common mistakes
- × Answering a deep grip by attacking instead of first removing it
- × Defending with chin-tuck alone and waiting — the choke only gets deeper
