Elijah Dorsey

Elijah Dorsey was born on September 9, 2001, in Annapolis, Maryland, and raised in the neighboring city of Upper Marlboro. From an early age, he threw himself into competitive athletics — football, baseball, basketball, and track — building the well-rounded physical foundation that would later translate seamlessly onto the mat.

His introduction to martial arts came at age 6, when a summer camp exposed him to Muay Thai and foundational self-defense concepts. That first encounter with combat sports proved decisive. Shortly after, Dorsey began training at Team Lloyd Irvin's academy, joining Donald Achnick's jiu-jitsu class at age 7 and enrolling in the gym's structured kids program. Under Achnick's guidance within the Team Lloyd Irvin system, the young Maryland native developed a deep passion for jiu-jitsu that would come to define his competitive identity.

Building a Championship Résumé

Dorsey's development under Donald Achnick and Lloyd Irvin produced one of the most accomplished colored belt careers in recent IBJJF history. His potential surfaced early in the juvenile divisions, where he captured IBJJF World Championship gold in both 2017 and 2018, and added an IBJJF Pan Championship title in 2018 — performances that marked him as a generational prospect.

His results only strengthened as he advanced through the belt ranks. He claimed the IBJJF Pan Championship in the no-gi purple belt division in 2019, then won the IBJJF Pan Championship at brown belt in both 2021 and 2022. At the 2022 IBJJF World Championship, he reached the final at brown belt, finishing as runner-up — a result that cemented his standing as the top prospect in his division heading into the black belt ranks.

The Decision to Go Pro

A pivotal shift in Dorsey's trajectory came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on his decision to pursue jiu-jitsu professionally at age 19, Dorsey told BJJ Heroes: "the COVID pandemic was probably the main thing that propelled me to want to become a pro. It gave me time to reflect on what I want to do for my life and helped me realize what I absolutely love to do." That clarity of purpose translated directly into results, and in June 2022, Lloyd Irvin promoted Dorsey to black belt in recognition of his exceptional competitive record.

Immediate Impact at the Highest Level

Dorsey wasted little time establishing himself at the black belt level. At the 2023 IBJJF European Championship, he earned a third-place finish in his senior black belt debut, signaling that his transition to the highest level would be seamless. Later that year, he captured victory at the ADCC East Coast Trials in 2023, qualifying for the ADCC World Championship and drawing widespread recognition as one of submission grappling's most exciting emerging competitors. His ADCC Trials win earned him a feature on JitsCast episode #25, reflecting his growing profile in the global grappling community.

Cementing Elite Status

Dorsey continued his upward trajectory in 2024, claiming gold at the 2024 IBJJF European Championship in the under 88kg division and reinforcing his standing among the elite competitors at that weight class. His momentum carried into 2025, when he competed in a stacked middleweight bracket at BJJ Stars 15 in April 2025. In July 2025, Dorsey was confirmed as the under 88kg representative for Team Misfits Americas at CJI 2, completing the team's full roster — a selection that underscores his reputation as one of the most sought-after competitors in his weight class on the international circuit.
