Gabriel Lucas was born on August 3, 1990, in Vitória, the capital of Espírito Santo, Brazil — a city that planted the seeds of his passion for combat sports. Drawn to martial arts from childhood, he began formal Karate training at just 8 years old. Even as he developed his striking craft, jiu-jitsu captured his imagination — though the absence of accessible training facilities in his area kept the sport out of reach during those formative years.

That changed around the age of 15, when a new gym offering jiu-jitsu classes opened near his home. Lucas stepped onto the mats and set in motion what would become a lifelong journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Building the Foundation

Gabriel Lucas's early development as a grappler was guided by his first coach, who carried him through the foundational belt stages up to purple belt. Recognizing that continued growth demanded a more competitive environment, Lucas made the deliberate decision to seek out a higher-level team — a move that would prove transformative.

He joined the academy of Eduardo Jamelão da Conceição, a legendary competitor from the 1990s whose name carried significant weight in Brazilian BJJ circles. As a black belt, Gabriel Lucas competes in the Peso Pesadíssimo division (over 100kg/221lbs), representing Checkmat on the international stage.
