Lapel Choke

Submission Gi only
Also known as:
Cachecol Choke Scarf Choke

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The choke relies on opposing forces: one hand deepens into the collar behind the neck while the other controls the opposite lapel to create a scissoring pressure across both sides of the neck.
  • · Heavy chest-to-chest or chest-to-back pressure prevents the opponent from creating space to relieve the strangle.
  • · Keeping elbows tight and wrists rotated inward maximizes the blade-like pressure of the forearms against the carotids.
  • · Anticipate the opponent framing or turning into you by switching your hip angle or transitioning to a tighter scarf hold position to maintain control.
  • · The lapel fabric must be fed deep past the neck centerline so the choke engages arterial compression rather than just an airway crush.

Execution

  1. 1 From side control or back control, feed one hand deep into the far side collar behind the opponent's neck, gripping with four fingers inside at or past the centerline.
  2. 2 With your other hand, grip the near-side lapel or collar at chest level, pulling it tight across the throat to eliminate slack.
  3. 3 Drop your head-side shoulder into the opponent's jaw or neck area, sprawling your weight forward to flatten them and block escape.
  4. 4 Squeeze both elbows together toward your own centerline while expanding your chest, creating a scissoring action with the collar across both carotid arteries.
  5. 5 If the opponent tries to bridge or turn, follow their movement and readjust hip pressure to maintain the choking angle.

Common mistakes

  • × Gripping the collar too shallow so the lapel only presses the windpipe, causing discomfort but not a true blood choke, giving the opponent time to escape.
  • × Leaving too much space between your torso and the opponent, allowing them to frame, shrimp out, or reguard before the choke tightens.
  • × Pulling with the arms while lifting the upper body away, which releases chest pressure and actually loosens the choke instead of finishing it.
