Diego Borges was born on January 15, 1990, and entered the martial arts world at age 11 through capoeira before discovering Brazilian jiu-jitsu. At 14, inspired by older cousins training at José Augusto Gato's academy in Manaus, he made the pivotal transition to BJJ — a decision that would define his athletic life. His aptitude for the sport surfaced immediately: within seven months of his first class, he earned his blue belt, a rate of progression that signaled exceptional promise.

That promise was tested at the 2004 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, where the teenage Borges entered the juvenile division and won decisively. The victory was only the beginning. In 2013, Diego Borges pursued an unconventional path to sharpen his grappling by traveling to Bulgaria to train alongside the country's national wrestling squad. The primary objective was to develop his no-gi takedown game through full immersion in the technical environment of high-level Eastern European wrestlers — a deliberate move to address the complete competitive spectrum of submission grappling.
