Inspired by the athleticism and discipline he witnessed on screen, Pontes began practicing judo and capoeira at the age of 10, building a technical foundation across two distinct martial disciplines. At 17, he briefly enrolled at a kickboxing gym, drawn to the striking arts, but financial constraints disrupted his training. The interruption proved temporary. At 21, Pontes returned to the gym with renewed purpose and a clear goal: to build a career in mixed martial arts.

His brown belt results were emphatic: in 2014, he claimed gold at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro — one of the most prestigious open-weight events on the grappling calendar — before adding the IBJJF European Open title at the same rank.
