Dopp earned a karate black belt under instructor Scotty Baker — an achievement that reflected his capacity for long-term commitment to a martial discipline. A subsequent relocation to Wichita Falls, Texas — where he played two additional years of college football — interrupted his progress once more, pushing jiu-jitsu aside until his playing career concluded.

Following the end of his football career, Dopp gravitated toward mixed martial arts, training at several local gyms before connecting with Griffin Phillips of Texoma BJJ, an affiliate of Rafael Lovato Junior. In May 2012, Dopp began training directly under Rafael Lovato Junior at his main academy, marking the beginning of the most consequential chapter of his development. Entering as a purple belt — among the lowest-ranked competitors at an event dominated by seasoned black belts and world champions — Dopp defied every expectation.
