Born on April 3, 1989, in the United States, Jared Dopp developed into a multi-sport athlete whose formative years blended martial arts and team sports in equal measure. That combination forged both the physical tools and the mental discipline that would later define his approach to Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Dopp earned a karate black belt under instructor Scotty Baker — an achievement that reflected his capacity for long-term commitment to a martial discipline. That same trait would prove central to his jiu-jitsu journey. Alongside his martial arts training, he pursued American football with serious intent, earning a starting role as a linebacker at Midwestern State University. Playing at that level demanded physical conditioning, tactical awareness, and composure under pressure, qualities that translated directly to his future on the competition mats.

First Exposure and an Interrupted Start

Dopp's first contact with jiu-jitsu came around 2005 through informal sessions led by his cousin Mike Mullin, who taught the art to local police officers. Conducted without the gi and grounded in practical self-defense rather than sport, these early lessons offered only a brief, unstructured introduction. With football commanding his focus, Dopp stepped away from jiu-jitsu without continuing his development.

He returned to the mat in 2008, this time engaging with the sporting side of the art. After several months of training, he tested for his blue belt at a seminar conducted by Renato Tavares in Norman, Oklahoma, and passed the evaluation. A subsequent relocation to Wichita Falls, Texas — where he played two additional years of college football — interrupted his progress once more, pushing jiu-jitsu aside until his playing career concluded.

Finding a Competitive Home

Following the end of his football career, Dopp gravitated toward mixed martial arts, training at several local gyms before connecting with Griffin Phillips of Texoma BJJ, an affiliate of Rafael Lovato Junior. Phillips became Dopp's first dedicated jiu-jitsu coach, introducing him to the technical and competitive dimensions of the sport and, critically, igniting a genuine desire to compete. That spark proved transformative.

In May 2012, Dopp began training directly under Rafael Lovato Junior at his main academy, marking the beginning of the most consequential chapter of his development. On October 6, 2015, Rafael Lovato Junior awarded Dopp his black belt, completing a journey that had unfolded across nearly a decade of intermittent and then increasingly serious engagement with the art.

A Historic 2013 Performance

The 2013 ADCC World Championship stands as one of the most remarkable individual performances in the tournament's history, and Jared Dopp was at the center of it. Entering as a purple belt — among the lowest-ranked competitors at an event dominated by seasoned black belts and world champions — Dopp defied every expectation. He defeated former ADCC champion Vinny Magalhaes alongside other elite-level grapplers, ultimately finishing 4th overall. The result immediately established him as a name to watch in the international submission grappling community.

That run was fueled by a deliberate shift in preparation. Dopp elevated his mat time to five sessions per week and added four to five dedicated strength and conditioning sessions — a significant increase from the two-to-three weekly sessions that defined most of his colored belt years. The investment returned dividends few could have anticipated, carrying a purple belt to the semifinals of the world's most prestigious submission grappling event.

Silver in 2015 and a Record-Setting Run

Dopp returned to the ADCC stage at the 2015 ADCC World Championship as a brown belt and improved upon his already historic mark by claiming a silver medal. Back-to-back performances of 4th place as a purple belt and silver as a brown belt collectively represent one of the most consistent and impressive records any competitor has built at the ADCC during their colored belt years.

Training Smart, Not Just Hard

What makes Dopp's competitive record particularly striking is the context surrounding it. For most of his colored belt career, he trained only two to three times per week, constrained by professional and academic commitments. In 2014, he began pursuing a chemical engineering degree, which reduced him to a twice-weekly training routine that he maintained even as he continued competing at the sport's highest levels.

Elite Results on a Compressed Schedule

Despite the reduced volume, Dopp's competition results remained elite. As a brown belt, he captured gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship and the IBJJF Pan American Championship, earned silver at the 2015 ADCC World Championship, and posted multiple podium finishes at the IBJJF World Championship during his purple belt years — all while managing the demands of an engineering curriculum.
