About this video

Dealing with the lockdown from half guard involves a series of strategic movements to regain control and pass the guard:

  1. When the opponent applies the lockdown and extends their legs, creating pressure on the knee, it's essential to address this by securing a nearside underhook to prevent them from pulling you on top or applying torque on your knee.
  2. Roll your hip towards the mat to give your leg more range to beat the opponent's toes. Make a strong connection with the floor to prevent the opponent from scooping your foot out again.
  3. Use your free foot to find the opponent's heel and lift it up, creating a safe passage for your leg to come back and prepare for a pass.
  4. Keep the outside edge of your foot glued to the mat and your head tight to the opponent. Push their heel down and dig between their legs to drag their leg out, breaking the lockdown.
  5. If you're slipping on the leg, flex your toes around their shin and drag their leg open. You can then kick past their toes, with your chin over their shin and your knee over their knee.
  6. Alternatively, you can cut the corner and look for a direct mount, or find other passing options once the lockdown is broken.
  7. Throughout the process, maintain a tight shoulder and a nearside underhook, with your arm out for base, to ensure stability and control.
