About this video

Effective half guard passing involves maintaining control and preventing the opponent from getting underneath. The key is to keep the opponent flat and your hips away from theirs by controlling the inside space, which includes the area from above the knee to below the elbow, and from the chin to the chest.

There are layers of defense to employ:

  1. Use your hands to prevent the opponent from gaining an underhook or to re-pummel if they start to get underneath you.
  2. If it's too late to use your hands, use your head to fill the space and prevent the opponent from getting underneath.
  3. When the opponent beats the hand and head defense, use your hips. Post your hands on the mat, yank your knee forward, and swing your hip over to flatten the opponent and reintroduce inside space.
  4. If the opponent attempts to enter deep half guard, redirect their hip and bring your hip to the floor to regain control with an underhook, reverse underhook, or head control.
  5. If you lose control, scoot down and pummel your fist to the floor to establish an underhook and potentially transition to a knee cut pass or return to half guard.

These defensive layers—hands, head, and hips—help protect your position and create opportunities to pass the guard, whether facing a conventional or deep half guard scenario.
