About this video
Passing the half butterfly guard with an underhook involves several key steps to maintain control and prevent sweeps:
- Secure an underhook and position your head next to your opponent's, with your shoulder under theirs and a grip on their leg.
- Ensure your hand is connected to the mat or your opponent's gi, creating a line from your fingertips to the top of your head that fits with your opponent's body shape.
- Align your shoulder line over your opponent's and maintain your head position slightly below theirs to prevent being swept.
- Use your head on the floor and your grip to disconnect your opponent's sweeping power from the mat, and be ready to post with your free arm if necessary.
- To pass, walk slightly to the side of your head, kick your leg straight in line with your hip and shoulder, and flex your foot to create a strong structure.
- Twist your hip to the side of your head and drop off the hook as your opponent follows with their hook.
- Once your hip and knee line has beaten your opponent's knee, switch to arm control on the side you're passing towards.
- Prevent your opponent's hand from connecting to a frame by keeping it on one side of your body, with your head tight against theirs.
- Complete the pass by establishing side control, using an overhook on the side you're passing towards to keep their hand separated from their body.
This technique allows you to pass the half butterfly guard effectively while minimizing the risk of being swept and maintaining strong control over your opponent.
