About this video

Executing a twisting half guard pass involves a series of strategic upper body controls and hip positioning to navigate through the opponent's guard. Begin by opening the guard and establishing a firm grip with the middle finger at the corner of the opponent's armpit, ensuring the shoulder is driving forward to meet the hand.

  1. Walk the opponent's hips away while simultaneously switching your own hips back to create space and prevent their hooks.
  2. Position your foot close to the opponent's hip to maintain control and avoid entanglement.
  3. Shift the opponent's knee from the top of your thigh to below your knee, allowing it to fall towards your foot, while keeping your shoulder line parallel to the floor and hips grounded.
  4. Slide your elbow inside and grip the top of the opponent's pants with your palm facing you. Use your elbow to help free your knee from their control.
  5. Maintain a connection to the side of the opponent's body to control their bridging power, effectively 'handcuffing' yourself to them.
  6. Once your knee is free and you have a secure grip, drive your knee to the mat, preparing for the opponent's potential push and ready to switch to an underhook.
  7. Ensure your shoulder is properly anchored, maintaining alignment over the opponent's shoulder line without rising above it.
  8. Free your arms if trapped, adjust your feet positioning, and prevent your shoulders from sliding forward. Walk the opponent's hip over and find a stable position for your own hip, walking your foot up as needed.
  9. Complete the pass by transitioning into the mount position.

Throughout the pass, it's crucial to connect each movement smoothly to maintain control and effectively pass the guard.
