About this video
Executing a knee slice pass from half guard involves several key steps to maintain control and successfully pass the guard:
- Secure an underhook and switch the side of your head, placing your body weight on your opponent's bicep and inner thigh.
- Pin the outside of your hip and knee to the ground to immobilize your opponent's leg and prevent them from moving onto their shoulder.
- Focus on controlling your opponent's arm rather than solely relying on the underhook; the underhook is there to prevent your opponent from gaining an underhook on you.
- Keep your shoulder down, head next to your opponent's, and weight over their arm.
- Open your knee towards your opponent's elbow and place the sole of your foot on top of their thigh to apply pressure.
- As your knee frees, lift your hip and work your toes between your opponent's legs to initiate the switch pass.
- Ensure your hip stays over the mat and not over your opponent's hip to maintain control and prevent them from turning into you.
- Keep your opponent flat using your arm control and by keeping your hip over the mat.
- When your knee is free, split your opponent's calves with your toes, push their top leg, and complete the pass.
- Control the arm that could prevent the pass by using your chest weight, a strong grip, and clamping your elbow down, combining three pressures on the arm.
- Test the effectiveness of your arm control by releasing the underhook and checking if your opponent can move to your back. The goal is to prevent this movement by maintaining solid arm control and keeping your hip over the floor.
