About this video
Executing a toe hold from the 50/50 guard can be an effective strategy to force a reaction from the opponent, potentially leading to an escape or a transition to a more advantageous position. The technique focuses on attacking the top leg while the opponent's legs are locked in a triangle configuration.
- Begin by ensuring your own foot is in a safe position, with your knee and shin aligned straight to your heel, and back heeling to put weight into your feet.
- Sit up and connect with the opponent's top foot, concentrating on pulling down at the foot to create a bend.
- Apply the toe hold by grabbing the foot, covering the laces, wrapping your hand around, and securing a figure-four grip on your wrist.
- Focus on pushing the big toe down while bringing your elbow up high to apply pressure and force the opponent to react by turning or straightening their legs.
- As the opponent reacts to the toe hold, use the opportunity to slip your knee line out of the 50/50 guard.
- Once the knee line is free, you can either transition to attacking with a better position or escape the 50/50 guard altogether.
- If the opponent separates their feet in response to the toe hold, you can return to working on freeing your knee line or take the inside position.
This toe hold setup is not necessarily intended to finish the opponent but to create a necessary reaction that can be exploited to improve your position or escape the 50/50 guard.
