About this video

When in the 50/50 guard, maintain a tight configuration by keeping your feet close and never uncrossing them. Ensure your knee line is dipped inside for defense, and start floating and straightening your foot out to create separation.

  1. Once the feet are separated, you can attack the knee or the foot that you originally targeted.
  2. Alternatively, pass the foot across and work your way out of the 50/50 position.
  3. To assist a student in applying a toe hold, use one hand to push the opponent's foot away.
  4. Reach over the top with the other hand and lift the opponent's toe.
  5. Look up, pull the elbow up, and bend the opponent's foot to secure the toe hold.
  6. Expect the opponent to react by bringing their second leg in, kicking, and turning.
  7. Respond by dipping your knee line in to maintain control and continue attacking in a dynamic manner.
  8. Once control is established, dismount by freeing your leg and extracting it from the 50/50 guard.
