About this video

Establishing a strong connection is crucial when playing guard, aiming for at least 2-3 points of contact. With hands and legs positioned to maintain this connection, transition to the backside 50/50 heel hook begins by placing a foot on the hip and securing the calf. The elbow then tucks inside the knee to create a tight configuration.

  1. Force the opponent to turn, bringing your leg high to maintain control and prevent their escape.
  2. Weave the foot over the opponent's body, turning onto your hip and bringing the opponent to their side in a backside position.
  3. Hook the far hip with your foot and pass the other foot across for the finish. Cross your feet, bottom over top, interlocking at the ankles.
  4. Execute the heel hook by securing the wrist watch grip on the heel, focusing on pulling the big toe back, and bridging with crossed feet.
  5. If the opponent attempts a back step, maintain the heel hook grip and keep your foot in front of their stomach, knee to the floor.
  6. Throw your foot over to control the far hip, either catching the heel in transition or stomping on the far hip.
  7. For the finish, concentrate on clamping down on the foot to create a flat foot, pushing into the far hip, and bridging your hips through while keeping your weight on the side of your arm, not the elbow.
  8. Bridge directly through the knee to finalize the submission, ensuring to maintain the knee line.

These techniques provide two finishing positions to secure the backside 50/50 heel hook, emphasizing control and preventing the opponent from escaping to a neutral 50/50 position.
