About this video
Defending against a 50/50 guard position involves creating a slip to prevent the opponent from applying finishing pressure. The following steps outline the defense:
- Tuck the foot and pressure the knee across to the opponent's hip to prevent their bridging ability.
- Maintain hip pressure with the shin across the opponent's hips to kill their bridge.
- If having trouble beating the opponent's knee, use whole body weight to assist in closing the distance.
- Avoid hugging the opponent or leaning forward, as this can lead to being thrown off balance.
- Point the toes, slip the heel, and on the way down, keep the feet crossed and lift the hips off the floor to pressure the opponent's hips.
- This pressure helps turn the opponent's body back to square and allows passing the knee.
- Control the opponent's elbow to prevent them from engaging their hips for a finish.
- If opting for a standing defense, the approach will differ slightly, focusing on slipping movements and a different method for standing up.
